Ramaswamy Memorial University (SRM) at Chintan Bhawan in Gangtok . He extended
heartfelt greetings to everybody present on the occasion. “Higher education in
India is passing through a phase of unprecedented expansion, marked by an
explosion in the volume of students; hence the enormity of the challenge of
providing equal opportunities of quality education to the ever-growing number
of students is a historic opportunity for correcting sectoral and social
imbalances to ensure a reinvigoration of institutions and extension of the
frontiers of knowledge,” he said.<o:p></o:p></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The governor also said the focus of the 12th Five Year Plan
is to provide equal access to all for quality education. Patil said the Gross
Enrolment Ratio for higher education moved up to 23 per cent in 2013 and the
expectation of people in seeing their aspirations fulfilled is rising every
day. “I would like to point out that the governments, both at thehe centre and
the state, cannot meet the targets of higher education alone. We need more
active participation from private entrepreneurs and global investors,” he said.

University of Tamil Nadu was ranked the No. 1 private university in India by
‘The Times of India’ recently. I have also learned that the varsity has entered
into collaborations with nearly 40 universities abroad and has initiated
exchange programmes at the faculty and student levels. The Sikkim government,
which enacted a special Act for facilitating the establishment of the SRM
University, expects more of such facilities to be brought here in course of
time for the benefit of Sikkimese students”.</span></div>

My dream of becoming a doctor started in my early childhood,
perhaps because of the ‘doctor set’ toy I got to play with. I took biology as
my major in my secondary school. As I learned the subject deeper, a fascination
for genetics developed. As soon as I was out of school, I learnt about a
undergraduate course in Genetic Engineering available only at SRM University in
Chennai and I enrolled there.<o:p></o:p></div>

SRM University has a semester abroad programme for students
who wish to spend one semester at a university abroad. With the guidance of my
HoD, professors and seniors, I decided to do my bachelor thesis abroad. I
landed at the University College Cork (UCC), Ireland. UCC is among the top two
per cent of universities in the world and a leading research institute in
Ireland. I acquired a position in the lab with a studentship of €1500 for my
work from January to May 2014.<o:p></o:p></div>

My project involved studying the ‘formation of actinin
nanostructures’ under the guidance of Dr. Kellie Dean and Dr. Paul Young at the
School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology. The department was equipped with all
instruments, and the scholars present there were helpful. My guides and the lab
attendants were friendly, and they made me feel as if I was in my home
institute.<o:p></o:p></div>

Indian society<o:p></o:p></div>

The Indian Society at UCC is very active. We, a host of
Indians, celebrated all the festivals that coincided with my stay. I also had
the privilege of walking down the Parade on one of the most celebrated days in
Ireland — St. Patricks Day. On this day, various countries and groups display
their act and march a parade.<o:p></o:p></div>

Cork is a city of beauty and silence. The silence is often
broken by the sounds of the waters of River Lee that runs through most part of
the city. Right from the taxi drivers to the random people I met on the
streets, everyone was friendly and was asking about my views on the city and my
life in India. The weather in Ireland was so different. It would be sunny one
minute and the next moment it would rain. But then once you settle down, it is
the most beautiful place and is a must-visit place for nature-lovers.<o:p></o:p></div>

This was the theme that ran through the speeches at the
inauguration of the SRM School of Law here on 13th August. The 100-odd students of
the SRM University, some of whom will study in the new law school, were treated
to what was perhaps their first lesson — lawyers can act as agents of change
and legal education is a must for any society. A lesson, delivered by a series
of speakers, who included a judicial delegation from the State of Maryland, US,
and several others from India.<o:p></o:p></div>

Starting off with the example of the country’s very own
Mahatma Gandhi, a lawyer, who went on to lead the freedom struggle, the First
Lady of the State of Maryland Judge Catherine O’Malley declared that students
should always remember what they can achieve. “Lawyers are agents of social
change because they act as voices for people who otherwise would have none,”
she said. Taking the theme further, the other dignitary presiding over the
inauguration, Chief Judge of the Supreme Court of Maryland Mary Ellen Barbera
said, “Legal education is an absolute necessity for any successful society. As
I see it, it is a powerful tool. Both in achieving social change and in the
proper administration of justice.”<o:p></o:p></div>

According to her, law was so deeply entwined in the
economic, political and social spheres of any society. She went on to give an
example from US  history, where a young
lawyer Thurgood Marshall achieved something that was a singularly important
event in the fight for equality for African-Americans — the de-segregation of

Distance Education<o:p></o:p></div>

The emphasis on distance education is growing among policy
makers to meet the goals of higher education in India. The country needs to
achieve at least 50% in Gross Enrolment Ratio in order to sustain a GDP of
10%.. These targets can only be met by deploying alternative methods in higher
education and distance education. Creating qualitative and inclusive distance
learning programs to reach out to far flung populations of the North-Eastern
hill regions is one of the primary objectives of SRM University , Sikkim. Every
effort will be taken by the University to help learners to gain access to the
portals of higher education, through the use of state -of- the- art
technologies in distance learning. The technology enabled learning would
include online and interactive methodologies. The SRM University, Sikkim is
well positioned to make a significant impact on Open Distance Learning programs
as well.<br />
