Radhakrishnan on Monday said the flight- testing of the indigenous cryogenic stage of the Geo Stationary Launch Vehicle (GSLV) D3 would be conducted in April. The vehicle would carry GAST-4, a communication satellite, he told reporters after receiving an honorary degree of Doctor of Science during the 5th convocation at the SRM University in Kattankulathur. “Though we had several GSLV flights, we were using the Russian cryogenic stages,” he said. As far as cryogenic engine and stages were concerned, ISRO had tested engines for 7,500 seconds. “We have qualified the stage. The entire stage was filled and fired for its entire duration of 720 seconds at [the Liquid Propulsion Centre in] Mahendragiri in Tamil Nadu and it was very successful,” Dr. Radhakrishnan said. the hindu-news Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar today exhorted students to guard against social evils like gender discrimination, dowry system, domestic violence and female foeticide. Delivering the Fifth Convocation address of SRM University at the suburban Kattankulathur near here, she said as educated youngsters, the students had a ''great obligation'' to strive for social change, be it directly or indirectly. ‘’We should be able to motivate others by inculcating in them the need to overcome centuries-old prejudices which had no relevance in today’s world’’, she said, adding, the ground reality was that there was a social chasm on the basis of caste, creed, class, gender, geography and language. These divisive forces should be weakened through a concerted effort. ‘’We need a concerted effort to bring about a social change which can weaken these divisive forces, strengthen unity and accelerate our march for national progress, she said. Calling for incorporating aspects of humanities into the curriculum of science specialisations, she said at present the humanities were increasingly adopting a scientif approach in their research methodologies and subject specializations. ‘’There is a need to humanise science disciplines to inculcate in the impressionable minds of students, a perspective about the individual, the society, the nation and the world. ‘’Every educated youngster should have a perspective about how our polity works and what our Constittuion seeks to achieve for the nation’’, she exhorted. Calling for an integrated approach by combining science with humanity to understand the society, she said such an approach would help the education system to produce men and women of disciplined minds and restrained manners. On the role of teachers, Ms Meira Kumar said teachers, apart from generating an intellectual environment, should also create among students a thirst for knowledge. ‘’They should devise ways and means of transforming our children into socially useful and productive members of the society. The learning process must be a harmonious blend of academic excellence and human development.'' In all, 4,519 students from 86 disciplines were awarded Under- Graduate, Post Graduate and Diploma certificates, including nine Doctorates at the convocation ceremony. Of them 3,172 were men and 1,347 women. There were a total of 124 Rank holders. Mr Prashantha Battacharya of B.Tech Computer science was awarded the Corporation Bank’s gold Medal for the best outgoing student. Milan has been and always will be a definite treat to all food lovers, Milan’10 will also have fun stalls and mouth watering delicacies and sweets keeping the audience to crave for more. 
 
 
 
‘Celebrating life’ is the theme of Milan. SRM shares this joy with under privileged children. As a prelude to Milan, every year SRM organizes an annual event - 'Butterflies' which many government school teachers and students look forward to. SRM buses pick up 500 students from around 25 schools from Chengelpet and Kancheepuram. They are given welcome drink and snacks. A host of events such as sports, literary and cultural events are conducted. Children get gifts, winners receive their medals and certificates from the victory stand. Film celebrities are invited to give away the awards for this event. The school children leave the campus in evening hours with a great experience, aspiration and vigour to study well and dream to pursue a college education which is the main objective of Butterflies. Natya Mayuri Sudha Chandran, the veteran dancer/actor is the brand ambassador for Butterflies’10.

CHENNAI: The SRM educational group has sprung a surprise in the realty sector by picking up a 90-ground property on the 100 Feet Road near 
Vadapalani from PVP Ventures, founded by Prasad V Potluri, for Rs 140 crore - at Rs 1.55 crore per ground. The deal is funded by two banks, said people in the know of things. A senior official in SRM confirmed the transaction. SRM is one of the leading educational groups in the state with a deemed university, medical college and dental college under its umbrella.

 The Vadapalani property comes with 3.24 lakh built-up area, which TCS was using till they shifted their operations to Siruseri IT Park recently. The building was constructed by the erstwhile SSi software. The SRM has converted the new facility into its corporate office. It will also locate its new film institute on the same premises. The PVP had sold an upcoming theatre at Villivakkam in the city's outskirts and a hotel in Ooty last year.</div>

Chennai: In a pioneering move, a 80-year-old Engineer's two-decade long research has proved that power could be generated from well water. Revealing this while participating in the valedictory of the silver jubilee celebrations of the Valliammai Polytechnic College, part of the SRM Group of Institutions at its campus in suburban Kattankulathur near here, Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister Arcot N Veerasamy today said he was personally satsified with the prototype project to be launched next week. Under this new innovative project, one MWof power could be generated in just 90 days when compared to other projects like thermal, hydro, wind mills, which would take at least three to five years to generate power. Mr Veerasamy, without disclosing the identity of the engineer who met him at his residence recently, said under the project, power could be produced using 15 HP motors to draw water from well. ''There is no need to have any big dams to generate power. The water from the household well can be drawn to generate power'', he added. After studying the prototype, Mr Veerasamy said this project could generate upto 10,000 MW without any gestation period. ''Once this proved successfull, there was no need any other source for producing power to meet the future needs''. He said Rs 1.5 crore has been arranged as desired by the Engineer for setting up the pilot project which would go on stream next week. Once it becomes successful, the Tamil Nadu government would wholeheartedly support this project to generate power upto 10,000 MW without any hitch. Observing that six lakh mw of power was required by 2035, He also requested the SRM Chairman T R Pachamuthu to consider venturing into power generation plants while expanding his educational plans. Stating that power from water was a revolutionary move, Mr Veerasamy said power from thermal plant was expected to be limited as the lignite stock would last only for 60 years and gas-based projects were proving costlier. Hydel projects too were becoming diffiicult due to lack of rains. Listing out various power projects launched by the DMK government after it came to power in 2006, Mr Veerasamy said the State would be self-sufficient in power from 2011. ''There will be no shortage of power as the State would be getting power fromvarious projects, including 1000 from Koodankulam Atomic power plant next year, and other projects being set up inNorth Chennai, Mettur, Tuticorin, Vallur, Ultra Mega Power Project at Cheyyur through Nuclear thermal Power Corporation, among others. Showering encomiums on Mr Pachamuthu for his self-less service in building a reputed institution like SRM, Mr Veerasamy promised the SRM Management all help in getting PG Medical courses from the coming academic year for its medical college.
