Programme (UNEP) as part of their global partnership hosted the winners of the
Bayer Young Environmental Envoy Programme. 50 young ‘environmental champions’
from 19 emerging and developing countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia
came together for a weeklong conference. <o:p></o:p></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Theme <o:p></o:p></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The theme of the conference was centred on sharing ideas and
thoughts on sustainability in food production and consumption. <o:p></o:p></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">According to a press release, The environmental champion
selected from India, Soumyajit Paul, SRM University, Kancheepuram, won the
Young Environmental Leader Award and a cash prize of €500 for his project
“TRANS-CONS”. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Soumyajit Paul is 20 years old and is pursuing Civil
Engineering at SRM University, Kancheepuram. Soumyajit’s project is
“TRANS-CONS” which is based on a green-building project and is about producing
a light transmitting concrete structure (such as walls, columns and beams) which
brings about savings in electricity during the day. A green-building project, TRANS-CONS, aims at creating energy savings up to 40 per cent by incorporating optical fibres into concrete structures. <o:p></o:p><o:p></o:p></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">This new kind of
building material can integrate the concept of green energy saving with usage
of self-sensing properties of functional materials. In an energy starved and
space striving country like India, this technology will be the pinnacle for
advancement of concrete technology. His comment on winning BYEE 2013, “I am
really thankful to Bayer for providing me an excellent opportunity to put forth
my views and represent India globally<o:p></o:p></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The conference’s itinerary comprised discussions, lectures,
workshops with experts from Bayer, the UNEP and the State Environmental Affairs
Department. During the course of their visit the students undertook field trips
to the AVEA waste disposal centre, Leverkusen, the UN-Water Decade Programme on
Capacity Development, Bonn, and the Messe (Trade Fair Organisation),
Düsseldorf. <o:p></o:p></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">With this conference, Bayer and UNEP have decided to end
their successful collaboration spanning over a decade.</span></div>

Adding yet another achievement, in the “list of firsts” of SRM University, Dr. Syed Asghar Hussain, Assistant Professor - Department of Ophthalmology, SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, Kattankulathur; a Phaco Surgeon and Specialist in Vitreo Retinal Surgery; has been privileged to become the first Indian Ophthalmologist, to be invited as “Guest Faculty” for the inaugural session of the prestigious international eye conference “Alcon Live Surgery”, held in collaboration between “AkhaliMzera Eye Clinic” and   Alcon Pharmaceuticals Ltd.; on October 19, 2013 at Tbilisi, Georgia.<br />
The Organizing Committee of this prestigious conference handpicked the candidature of Dr.Syed Asghar Hussain from a list of world renowned surgeons, as he has a unique talent of being trained in Phaco-emulsification Surgeries as well assub-specialty training in the form of long term “Fellowship in Vitreo Retinal Surgery(FVRS)”.<br />
During the conference, Dr.Hussain successfully presented five surgical videos in the discipline of "Phaco&Vitreo-retinal surgery complications";which was the highest amongst the invited Guest Faculty; apart from being the “Master of Ceremonies (MC)” for the entire conference; for which he received rave reviews from the organizers as well as the audience. The titles of the five surgical videos presented by Dr.Hussain were“Broken Haptic during Cataract Surgery”, “Nucleus Drop during Phacoemulsification Surgery”, “Posterior Capsular Rupture in Phaco-vitrectomy”, “Management of Subluxated Crystalline Lens Secondary to Trauma” and “Phacoemulsification in Traumatic Iridodialysis”.<br />
The audience comprised practicing ophthalmologists and residents from various countries, such as Russia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, Armenia, Ukraine, etc.; who came up with active and intellectual discussions on the various topics that were presented.<br />
<span style="font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.5;">A highlight of this program was the sharing of invaluable clinical information by the faculty, who delivered scientific presentations concerning the latest technologies and treatment methods in various branches of ophthalmology.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.5;">The topics were “Reasons for failures in Macular Hole Surgery” by Prof.Dr.Vincenzo Ferrara, “Supra-choroidal Space Surgery - the Next Frontier” by Prof.Dr.Ehab EN L Rayes, “Refractive Vitreo Retinal Surgery” by Priv. Doz. Dr. med. Klaus Lucke and “Surgical Treatment of Presbyopia” by Prof. Dr.ÖmerFarukYilmaz; who too are considered leaders, pioneers and innovators in their respective areas of specialty.</span><br />
This was followed by a "Gala Dinner" at the breathtakingly beautiful and legendary restaurant called "Funicular"on top of the mountain Mtatsminda, built in 1905 by the earlier Soviet Regime. <span style="font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.5;">In Dr.Hussain’s words, “The breathtaking beauty of the Georgian countryside, the lovely people, the historical buildings mixed with modern architecture and the pleasant climate, provided the perfect setting for this one-of-a-kind conference with a multi-cultural audience. I was particularly touched by the hospitality, warmth, love and affection expressed by the Georgian people.”</span><br />
<span style="font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.5;">During the closing Ceremony, he has expressed to the organizers that it would be great if future options of "Collaborative Ventures" between SRM University and Tbilisi State Medical University and/or AkhaliMzera Eye Clinic, could be formally worked out. Through such initiatives, India and Georgia can work together towards a brighter future, thus making this world free from avoidable blindness.</span></div>

open to students and researchers in the field of Physical, Biological,

</span>A key feature of this edition of Youth Science Congress will
be an essay competition among the young scientists on “Vision for Science and
Technology in pursuit of Excellence”. Ten best entries will be selected and

galaxy of senior scientists and policy experts in the field of Science and

</span>This is aimed at giving an opportunity to young scientists
to put their view points and vision for use of science and technology for
ensuring a holistic development of our country. The essays titled “Vision for
Science and Technology in pursuit of Excellence” could cover vision you have
for combining scientific excellence and human development. Entries could
highlight the pressing problems the country faces and what science and
technology options could provide for solving these problems. It also could
focus on a vision for a conducive and enabling environment in which scientists
could achieve maximum productivity and contribute immensely in their career
paths. Please mail your entries to dayanandham@mssrf.res.in with the subject,
“Essay competition”. Essays are to be within 1500 words. A certificate from one
of your faculty members should accompany the entries stating that these are
original writings of the person submitting the entry.<o:p></o:p><br />

</span>10 best entries will be selected by a screening committee
and selected entries will be provided a 10 min slot for making a presentation
on these entries in the plenary session of the congress. The selected

<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: large;">The contest was open to undergraduate and graduate-level
students in information technology (IT) and engineering fields of study across
India, provided students the opportunity to submit technical papers on topics
such as mechanical engineering, information technology, computer science and
engineering, biotechnology and seven other concentrations. It further provided
an opportunity for students to interact with others in similar educational and
professional fields via the Nuage Café environment.<o:p></o:p></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: large;">The Judges of the
Nuage Technical Paper Contest had verified the originality of content in the
paper submissions and the best papers were selected as honorary mentions.
Honorary mentions will get an opportunity to present their technical papers to
a corporate panel of potential employers in online events too. The students
will also be given chance to publish their papers in various international
journals.<o:p></o:p></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: large;">The project (prototype) presented a solution for those kinds
of disabled people who are unable to spend a lot of money to buy a fancy
wheelchair that requires on board computer and other expensive instruments. A
simple structure and user friendly control system are used to control the
wheelchair movement using only the movements of neck muscles, a voice
recognition system, remote control, obstacle sensing and detection mechanism.
Generally this type of design would suit most to the people those who are
totally disabled, that means completely unable to move their hand or leg.<o:p></o:p></span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> </span><span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: large;">Nehal Dash and Mufaddal Azad has also been nominated and
choosen for the best Innovative Idea<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  
</span>under Public Service domain of the recently held ‘’YAHOO & ACCENTURE
Innovation Jockeys-2013 contest for this paper. The Team START comprised of
seven students including Nehal, Mufaddal, Koustav, Nayan, Manish, Raghav and
Akshit have won the Best Project Award in Konvolve’12, a multi disciplinary
project competition and exhibition and the team START is currently working on
this project IntelliWheelz, for making a real time working model of this wheel
chair for the differently abled people.</span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Nirmal Ganesh Manoharan, final year student of Computer
Science Engineering has been placed with Works Applications, the No: 1 ERP
solution in Japan. Works Applications has its headquarters in Japan and they
come for campus recruitment only to select IIT campuses and very few
Universities in India. “SRM University is very fortunate that we are able to
meet their requirements and they continue to come to SRM year after year for
recruitment,” said Mr. Ganapathy, Dean, Placements, SRM.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>He recalled that even last year a computer
science engineering graduate student was selected.<o:p></o:p></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Nirmal Ganesh Manoharan said that the process was tough and
he added that his nine week summer internship training with Microsoft has
helped him a lot. The process started with a pre-placement talk and then a
programming assignment consisting of three questions was given to students.
Nirmal completed his assignment successfully and then he was called for the
next level that included online coding tests and personal interview.<o:p></o:p></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">It is to be noted that Nirmal has been placed with the
highest salary package of Rs. 32 lakhs and when asked to share his advice to
the fellow students, he says, “Instead of trying to learn all the programming
languages, it is better to try and master one. Knowledge on Data structure
concepts and algorithms is indeed an added advantage.”<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>He said he learnt problem solving ability,
real life industry conditions during his internship training in Hyderabad with
Microsoft. He thanked SRM University for the freedom given to pursue his
interests.</span></div>

Engineering made a special beginning by entering into a Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) with CSIR-Structural Engineering Research Centre (SERC).
The MoU is aimed at imparting special training and providing students an
opportunity to work on high value research projects. This MoU facilitates the
exchange of scientific and technical information, which are in the public
domain. Conferences, workshops and seminars of social and technical relevance
will be organised jointly. This MoU is expected to boost the enthusiasm of
research scholars and faculty of department of Civil Engineering, SRM, Rampuram
Campus to work in current areas of research in association with SERC.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The agreement was signed by Dr N Sethu Raman, registrar, SRM
University and K Vasudevan, head, RPBD, SERC in the presence of Dr Nagesh Iyer,

Principal, and Dr T Ch Madhavi, head, Department of Civil Engineering, SRM. All the heads of the laboratories and senior scientists of SERC were also present.</span></div>
