To demonstrate this, the Government of India partnered with the United Nation Development Program (UNDP) and Global Environment Fund (GEF) to conduct programmes based on solar power for market development.
A business meet, held at SRM University on Tuesday, demonstrated the positives of the UNDP – GEF project on Concentrated Solar Technology (CST) by inviting faculties from various institutions, hospitals and hotels in Tamil Nadu. The project has been planned for a duration of five years (April 2012 – March 2017) under which they are targeting nearly eight States in the country, including Tamil Nadu and Karnataka in South India.
According to Sudhir Kumar, Joint Director of World Institute of Sustainable Energy (WISE), Tamil Nadu has shown great interest in this initiative. “This being the third campaign in Tamil Nadu, the State has already come up with nearly 45 project ideas. Out of this, we are looking to approve at least 20,” he said.
The event also saw the participation of various representatives from hostels and hospitals in Tamil Nadu.
The attractive, yet expensive alternative has not deterred the hospitality sectors as it gives them an opportunity to contribute to the nature. “The main idea is to give back something to the nature, so moving towards a renewable energy will be healthy decision,” said Dinesh from Taj Fishermen Cove. A recent policy announcement of the Tamil Nadu Government asking various sectors to spend three per cent of their revenue on solar energy has led many hotels to try this alternative.
The project has several advantages other than being environmental friendly. The Union Government is giving users a 30 per cent subsidy for commercial use and 60 per cent subsidy for non-commercial use.
Using solar power in commercial areas will also give users an 80 per cent of Income Tax rebate. Pankaj Kumar, DPM in UNDP insisted to make optimum use of this subsidized opportunity by the sectors before the subsidies are pulled back.

SRM University-MBBS entrance exam -June 16, 2013 at 10 AM to 12.30 PM.

SRM University is conducting an entrance examination for admission to Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) course commencing in the session 2013.

The MBBS entrance test is scheduled to be carried out on 16th June, 2013

Eligibility:

H.S.C (+2) or equivalent qualification with English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology (or Botany & Zoology)/ Biotechnology possessing marks as prescribed by the MCI.

Admission Procedure:

Selection will be made on merit, based on the marks secured in the Entrance Examination conducted by the University on All India basis.

The downloaded application form can be filled and sent along with a DD of Rs 1,000/- drawn in favor of SRMIST, payable at Chennai, to the Director (Admissions).

Vice-chancellor M Ponnavaiko on Thursday said two four-year courses (BSc Renal Dialysis Technology and BSc Radiology and Imaging Technology), a two-year MSc Medical Physics programme, MSc Econometrics, MA International Studies and MCom Finance and Accounts will be introduced this year.

Three MTech programmes, including food safety and quality management, and in renewable and solar photovoltaic technology; a dual degree that will help candidates get a Master of Health Management and an MBA degree at the end of the course, and a five-year integrated MBA that students can take up after class 12 have been planned.

"Three diploma programmes, including a diploma in politics, leadership and political entrepreneurship, are being introduced," said Ponnavaiko. The other two diplomas are on value education and an international Tamil teachers' diploma. Chancellor TR Pachamuthu released the results of the entrance examination. "Counseling for the BTech course begins on June 1, and 60,000 candidates will be called for counseling in batches of 4,000 a day," Pachamuthu said.</div>

With innovative ideas that offer a peek into the future, three students of SRM University, doing their aerospace engineering are here to explore the possibilities of designing an aircraft with minimum or no propulsion noise.

Airbus Fly Your Ideas is a contest that challenges students worldwide to develop new ideas to deliver a greener aviation industry. This competition is organised by aircraft manufacturer Airbus and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

The three geniuses, Anita Mohil, Balakrishnan Solaraju and Michael Thomas, have made it to the top five teams in the final leg of the competition that saw around 600+ teams participating. The team which is called team AVAS propose to reduce propulsion noise by means of jet exhaust shape modification using shape memory alloys. These alloys are energized by harvested electricity generated by advanced thermoelectric materials using engine heat source.<br />
The other teams, which hail from Australia, Brazil, Italy and Malaysia, have equally brilliant ideas, which target fuel efficiency, traffic growth, passenger experience and community friendliness. These teams had to go through three stages of preliminary rounds with a final round and presentation that is to be held on the 14th of June in Paris, France. The winning team will receive a prize money of 30, 000 Euros and tickets to attend an air show that is to be held in Paris. The runners-up receive a prize money of 15,000 Euros.

With team AVAS having an experienced member at hand, who has attended a similar competition in China, Flying into the future-Space Exploration Innovation Contest 2012, organized by the Chinese Society of Astronautics. With a team that's nearly perfect and the project mentor Mr. K. SAKTHIVEL, a SRM faculty member who has been the backbone of the team, the members hope to make it to the top notch. To say the least the team members are nothing less than exhilarated and have their hopes pinned on winning this competition as they take off to Paris.</div>

The counselling seeks to fill up 7,000 seats for 19 undergraduate and 35 postgraduate courses in the university. A total of 2,23,000 candidates from all over the country applied for admission.

The University has stated that the counselling for admission to MBA and MCA would commence on June 9. Counselling for admission to health sciences and M. Tech will be held on June 10 and June 23 respectively.<br />
