There's possibly only one thing in the world which doubles when you give, Joy. Who hasn't experienced the joy of giving? And who wouldn't want to experience it again and again? Exactly the reason why, these actos of joy, are now celebrated as a festival all over India as the Joy of Giving Week. The Social Club of SRM University has joined hands with Chennai Volunteers to conduct the Joy of Giving Week.<br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The name Paalam is synonymous with social worker
Kalyanasundaram who has worked tirelessly for the cause of the poor and the
needy. A profile. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: large;">AN EPITOME of selfless service, `Paalam' P. Kalyanasundaram
is a fine example of simple living and high thinking. He practices Gandhian
principles without bothering whether the world takes notice of them or not. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: large;">As he approaches people and appeals for funds to help
suffering children in his soft voice, they realise that he is not just another
fund-raiser. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: large;">For someone who represents the best of humanity, his is a
remarkable story. Kalyanasundaram was born and brought up in Melakaruvelangulam
village, of Nangunari taluk in Tirunelveli district. "There were only 30
houses then. No roads, no buses, no school, no electricity, not even a petty
shop. I studied in the light of a kerosene lamp or by candlelight till I was
about ten years old," he says. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: large;">Kalyanasundaram lost his father when he was only one year
old. After completing school, he was determined to pursue a B.A degree with
Tamil as the main subject. As he was the only student for the course at St.
Xavier's College, Tirunelveli, the college management persuaded him to take up
another subject, but he refused. Impressed by the youngster's determination to
study Tamil, Karumuttu Thygaraja Chettiar, the founder of MTT Hindu College,
had no hesitation admitting him to the course he wanted. Karumuttu Chettiar
also bore the youngster's study expenses. "Those days I can never forget,
especially the Chettiar's munificence," recalls Kalyanasundaram. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: large;">The turning point in his life came when he was doing library
science at the Madras University. That was when the Indo-China War was on.
"I was listening to Nehru on the radio requesting us to contribute to the
defence fund. Immediately, I went to Chief Minister Kamaraj and gave him my
gold chain. I was probably the first student to have done such a thing,"
he says with pride in his eyes. Kamaraj was so impressed by the gesture that he
felicitated the youngster at a special function on May Day that year (1963). </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: large;">Another incident that Kalyanasundaram remembers vividly is
his encounter with the then sub-editor of Ananda Vikatan. "It was he who
told me that I would do well as a social worker, while engaging in some plain
speaking on public service... But I decided I needed no publicity." </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: large;">He later joined Kumarkarupa Arts College in Tuticorin as
librarian and spent 35 years there, even while doing his social work. He
donated the money he got from the sale of his ancestral property to the poor.
An amount of Rs. one lakh that Kalyansundaram received as salary arrears, he promptly
gave to the district collector to be used for orphans. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: large;">For 45 years, Kalyanasundaram's social work focussed on
children. However, in 1998, after retirement, he decided to expand his service
and, thus, Paalam was born. One of the first things he did was to direct the
money he received as retirement benefit to social cause. Paalam serves as the
link between donors and beneficiaries. Assistance is not only monetary.
Children are helped in pursuing education, medical attention is provided to the
needy, blood donation camps are organised and blood samples are reached to
hospitals during emergencies, the unemployed, elderly, sick and handicapped are
rehabilitated, and free counselling is provided. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: large;">"We work on the principle of gaining everybody's
support. That is the reason why membership costs just a rupee a month (life
membership is Rs.100). We take about anything used or unused - old newspapers,
clothes and utensils - and reach these to people in need. We are sort of a
bridge between donors and beneficiaries," states Kalyanasundaram. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: large;">Paalam has also taken active part in relief work during
cyclones and earthquakes that have struck various parts of India. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: large;">People trust Paalam because of Kalyanasundaram and what he
stands for. "I have slept on pavements and railway platforms to find out
what it is like to be poor, without a roof over your head," he says,
joyfully recounting an instance of his students running up to him to tell him
that they had spotted his look-alike sleeping on a railway platform. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: large;">"I am a bachelor and my personal needs are meagre. I am
able to manage doing odd jobs in a hotel or a laundry. I simply do not wish to
own anything. In fact, one of my happiest moments was when, after being chosen
as the `Man of the Millennium' by an American organisation, I donated the
entire amount of Rs. 30 crores I received towards charity. Everything is,
therefore, a state of mind. Finally, what do we take with us when we leave
planet earth?" Kalyanasundaram wonders aloud! </span></div>

The story of Nikita Hari from Pazhankavu in Vadakara is 
an inspiration to many. Nikita, born to a small-scale industrialist, 
aspired big and reached there with hard work and determination. On 
Thursday, she will fly to London to take up her chosen calling.</div>

Ms.
 Nikita is the only Indian candidate who has qualified for research in 
Cambridge University, U.K. this year. An electronics and instrumentation
 engineer from CUSAT who completed her postgraduation from the SRM 
University in Chennai, Nikita was working as a lecturer at the National 
Institute of Technology, Kozhikode, when she applied for research 
abroad. Her brilliant academic background got her admission into Harvard
 and Oxford Universities and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology 
besides Cambridge. But she chose the latter for the better functioning 
department of Electronics there along with the chance to work under the 
Head of the Department. To top it all, the university granted her a 
scholarship of Rs.50 lakh, which would cover half her fee. </div>
<div class="body">
The
 research topic Nikita had selected was to develop instruments that 
would reduce transmission loss while connecting non-conventional energy 
sources to electric grids. She aspires to become a scientist and in 
future help, inspire, and promote girls who are bright, but economically
 backward, to take up scientific research. </div>

A big fan
 of Albert Einstein and Steve Jobs, Nikita is the daughter of Haridas, 
who own Intec Industries in Vadakara and Geetha. Nikita was accorded a 
warm send-off and felicitation by the local people of Pazhankavu as well
 as many organisations recently.</div>

competition, in an attempt to challenge the best of minds and the sharpest of
wits, hosted Impulse'13, an intermedical college quiz competition.<o:p></o:p></span><br />

held on the 17th of August 2013 at the SRM Medical College Auditorium, saw
students from various medical college across the south of India taking part in

for the very first time on August 10, 2008, with the humble beginnings as an
intramedical college competition, and from its successful shows in 2009, 2010,
2011 and 2102 rose to a Zonal Level Competition.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The rules seem pretty simple, every team consists of at
least 2 participants, who can be an undergraduate MBBS up to the rank of CRRI.
While the participants are required to carry their ID cards for verification
purposes, every team goes through a Prelims in order to enlist teams for the
semi-finals.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The winners walked with handsome prizes, the winner received
a cash prize of Rs. 15,000 and a speed scholarship, with the first runner up
getting a cash amount of Rs. 10,000 along with a speed scholarship while the
second runner up was awarded with a cash prize of Rs. 7,500 with a speed
scholarship.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Also, as part
pre-event competitions, Impulse'13 also conducted a poster and slogan
competition on the 16th of August. Calling for posters on the theme, prevention
of non-communicable diseases and slogans on the theme of organ donation.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Accentuating the
archaic and often repeated saying: United we stand and divided we fall. Simple
may be its meaning, but the magic created when hands joined and hearts pounded
in symphony was purely breathtaking, such is the feeling and the ecstasy that
the participants express.</span></div>

Teacher’s Day celebration in Dr. T. P. Ganeshan Auditorium, SRM University,

Directors, Deans and other honorable dignitaries, the teaching community was
felicitated for all their achievements in teaching profession and research

the chancellor remembered and honored his teachers who groomed him for what he

University teaches the students in a good ambience of teaching faculties. He
also wished the teaching community to work towards excellence and make SRM
University globally the best. He also remembered the growth of SRM University

speech to the teaching faculty. He stressed much about the importance of
inter-personal and intra-personal intelligence required for a person to become
successful. It is the teacher, the only person who can make the students imbibe
good things from the society and do good back for the society. It is all the
wishes and inspirations of a teacher will make a student to be a renowned
person in the society. He also remarked that students are always non-biological

Ponnavaikko also felicitated the gathering with his motivative speech. He also
listed down the characteristics of a successful teacher and propagated his
mantar of teaching the students from known to unknown. He also announced that
the number of research papers has increased from the past academic year, which
is a good sign of making SRM University globally the best. Following him the
Pro-Vice Chancellor (P&D), expressed his gratitude to his teachers by
remembering them in this celebration. He also remarked that this was the 21st
Teacher’s Day Celebration celebrated in the campus. He also asked the teachers
to inculcate good things in them and to preach the good things what they
practice. Following all felicitations of the dignitaries, the teaching
faculties were awarded for research and journal publications. The program ended
with the teacher’s pledge headed by the Director of Engineering and Technology.

CEO of "Excel HR Facilitations and Services Pvt. Ltd" went off with a
flying start. This year was SRM's debut performance. It was held on 2nd Feb,
2013 at the YMCA grounds, Nandanam, Chennai.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">It was a great exciting experience for the staff and faculty
who were participating in a sports event with executives and managers who were
their fellow competitors. "Josh "an inter-departmental cultural had
set the spark.<o:p></o:p></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">More than 30 staff members from SRM vied for a track and
field events, competing with veterans from corporate like Lanson Toyota,
Accenture, Ashok Leyland, Blue Dart to name a few and did leave a mark. There
were many track and field events both in the individual and group category, fun
events were for teams only.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The general comradeship among the staff whose main purpose
was to compete in all events and bring home the glory. This was more easily
achieved than what any inter-departmental meeting would have possibly achieved.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<o:p><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> </span></o:p><span style="font-family: Calibri;">All the participants who competed in events brought glory by
being placed first, second or third. SRM won 61 medals. They also won the best
mascot prize. They cheered and motivated the team. Winning so many medals for
the debut participation they resolved to pick up the ICMO champion award next
year. Team trophies ear-marked were for: Best Cheering team, Best Mascot, Best
March Past and Best Colours.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

have made a mark and having gotten an idea, will definitely bring home the
trophy next year. Our staff knows now each other's strengths and will look
forward to working as a team in the coming years. As the program motto was of
uniting the company under one flag, help bonding among the company staff
wherein the take home is not just prizes and medals, but the spirit of being
one and needing to soar, this was achieved remarkably among our SRMites.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
