CHENNAI: SRM University would introduce energy-efficient light emitting diode (LED) lights in the campus besides taking other initiatives to lessen energy consumption and protect environment. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an international conference on Electrical Energy <a style="POSITION: static; TEXT-DECORATION: underline !important" id="KonaLink0" oncontextmenu="return false;" class="kLink" onmouseover="adlinkMouseOver(event,this,0);" onmouseout="adlinkMouseOut(event,this,0);" onclick="adlinkMouseClick(event,this,0);" href="http://www.expressbuzz.com/edition/story.aspx?Title=SRM+to+promote+energy+efficiency&artid=SjlKu8djmuk=&SectionID=lifojHIWDUU=&MainSectionID=lifojHIWDUU=&SEO=SRM+University&SectionName=rSY%7C6QYp3kQ=#" target="_top">Systems</a> and Power Electronics in Emerging Economics (ICEESPEEE 2009), Vice-Chancellor, SRM University, Prof P Sathyanarayanan said that the varsity would replace incandescent lamps with LED lights at a cost of Rs 40 lakh. About 300 lights would be put up soon with the active involvement of students. In a phased manner, the whole university would have energy-efficient lighting and equipment. <a style="POSITION: static; TEXT-DECORATION: underline !important" id="KonaLink1" oncontextmenu="return false;" class="kLink" onmouseover="adlinkMouseOver(event,this,1);" onmouseout="adlinkMouseOut(event,this,1);" onclick="adlinkMouseClick(event,this,1);" href="http://www.expressbuzz.com/edition/story.aspx?Title=SRM+to+promote+energy+efficiency&artid=SjlKu8djmuk=&SectionID=lifojHIWDUU=&MainSectionID=lifojHIWDUU=&SEO=SRM+University&SectionName=rSY%7C6QYp3kQ=#" target="_top">Solar energy</a> would also be utilised. ‘The initiative is aimed at conserving energy and protecting environment.’ Prof in Electrical Engineering, IIT Delhi, Dr. Bhim Singh who was a panelist in the conference said energy efficiency was vital in the present-day context. Countries like Japan were taking initiatives in this direction. Regulations were strictly followed and equipment that consumed high energy was not allowed. Such measures were needed everywhere. Industries should show more interest in making lighting appliances that consumed less energy while still providing optimal illumination level. International conference: Earlier, a two-day meet ‘ICEESPEEE 2009’ was inaugurated in SRM University. Varsity officials said the goal of the conference was to promote research and developmental activities in electrical fields in India and the rest of the world
