Lexposium 2025: Legal Luminaries Illuminate the Future of India’s Judiciary at SRMIST

The School of Law, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), hosted Lexposium 2025, a premier legal symposium that brought together distinguished jurists, senior advocates, and academic leaders. The event was inaugurated with Hon’ble Former Chief Justice of India, Mr. N. V. Ramana, as the Chief Guest.

In his inaugural keynote address, Justice Ramana reflected on the evolution of the Indian judiciary as a pillar of constitutional governance since independence. He emphasized that the judiciary derives its strength not merely from statutes but from the trust and confidence of the people. He highlighted the evolving role of lawyers and stressed the importance of legal education in producing professionals who embody both competence and ethics. He also called for inclusive law-making through stakeholder consultation to ensure legislation remains relevant and just.

Hon’ble Justice Sanjay Karol, Supreme Court of India, in his keynote remarks, underlined the vision of dignity, liberty, equality, and fraternity that anchors the Constitution. He reminded the gathering of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar’s caution that however good a Constitution may be, it is never self-executing—it comes alive only when its values are practiced in courtrooms, classrooms, the media, the halls of government, and the streets of the nation. Justice Karol also spoke on the ethical obligations of the media, warning that in the age of the 24-hour news cycle, the race to be first must not overtake the duty to be accurate, for democracy itself suffers when sensationalism replaces truth. Citing the Oscar-winning film Spotlight, he reminded students of the power of integrity and perseverance in strengthening democracy.
Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India, addressed the pressing structural challenges of the judiciary. He pointed to judicial pendency, the underutilization of retired judges, and the urgent need for reforms. Advocating mediation as a key instrument of justice delivery, he urged students to turn often to the Preamble, which he called the “heart of Indian democracy.”

Dr. T. R. Paarivendhar, Hon’ble Founder and Chancellor, SRM Group of Institutions, reflected on SRMIST’s journey of academic excellence and reaffirmed his vision of advancing legal education in India.

Dr. P. Sathyanarayanan, Pro-Chancellor (Academics), SRMIST, spoke on the resilience of the judiciary in sustaining Indian democracy. He emphasized the responsibility of law schools to produce graduates who not only argue cases but also seek truth, defend justice, and live the spirit of the law.

Lexposium 2025 thus became a vibrant platform where students, academicians, and practitioners engaged with both the challenges and enduring values of the Indian legal system. The symposium celebrated the Constitution not only as a legal document but as a living guide for justice, democracy, and nation-building.
