The Tamizh Perayam (Tamil Academy) established by the SRM
University, announced ‘Tamil Academy Awards’ for the year 2013 here recently.
The awards were announced by M Ponnavaiko, Vice-Chancellor of the SRM
University.
Under the aegis of the university, the Tamil Academy is engaged in the development of Tamil language, literature, arts and research. It provides online education in Tamil language, Tamil religious studies and various other diploma programmes and book-publishing opportunities as well. Every year, the academy distributes awards worth `20 lakh to scholarly works under 11 categories such as fiction, essay collection, children’s literature and research.
This year, under the category of ‘Pudhumaippithan Fiction Literature Award’ and ‘Bharathiar Poetry Award’, 111 books each were recommended for awards. Under ‘Azha Valliappa Children Literature’ category, there were 88 books, ‘G U Pope Translation Literature’—28 books, ‘Pe Na Appusamy Science Literature’—29 books, ‘Anandakumarasamy Fine Arts Literature’—8 books and ‘Muthuthandavar Thamizhisai Award’ category—8 books that were recommended.
Under the ‘Developmental Tamil Award category’, 18 books and in ‘Vibulanandar Fiction Literature Award’ category, 35 books were recommended.
Addressing reporters, Ponnavaiko said that the selection procedure involved a number of steps. After three to four rounds of assessment, which is done by scholars belonging to the respective fields, the final list is prepared.
Besides awarding the erudite literary works, the academy also presents awards to two Tamil scholars — ‘Parithimaar Kalaingnar’ and ‘Paarivendhar Painthamizh Award’. This year, 30 and 32 scholars were recommended for these awards respectively and Kovai Gnani and Thamizhannal were chosen.
The awards will be presented at a function to be held at the SRM University, Kattankulathur, on August 24.
