Management known for its academic brilliance & state of the art
infrastructure is commited to deliver an exceptional brilliance blended with
wonderful oppurtunities in celebrating the traditional festivals and it gives
more significance to all the traditional festivals so that it could impart
great knowledge to the upcoming hoteliers.
Pongal was celebrated in
a traditional and also in exuberant grandeur on 11.01.2019 in its premises. The
107 students and 20 faculties of SRM, SIKKIM, who are present for the campus
exchange program, were welcomed heartily. Students from HANAM UNIVERSITY, SOUTH
KOREA who are in SRM for one month training also witnessed the traditional Pongal
festival.
Students
from Hanam university & Sikkim had participated and enjoyed our traditional
Pongal Celebration and witnessed our
rich heritage exhibiting our thankfulness to Famers and Mother Nature through
the festival of Pongal.
The
purpose and significance of celebrating pongal in SRM Institute of Hotel
Management is to impart the diversified
heritage of our culture. Students of SRM Institute of Hotel Management hosted
the event with many traditional dances like folk dance, theme dances based on jallikatu dance, and there were interesting
traditional games like uri adi game, rope game and silambattam which were
participated by Sikkim and south Korean students. Students of SRM, Sikkim also
performed their traditional dance.
The entire place created
the feel of a traditional set up with the pongal ambience being decorated with
thoranams, mango leaves, a symbolic farmer’s hut was also made in the centric
portion of decoration. A new mud pot was decorated and sweet pongal was prepared
out of the newly harvested rice, jaggery, ghee and was enriched with cashew
nuts, raisins and flavored with elachi. A lump of fresh, lush turmeric along
with sugarcane added charm and brought the exact feel to the setup.
A sumptuous traditional lunch
was served with crispy parupu vadai and thengai thuvayal as starter,
sarkaraivalli kizhangu poriyal, a delicious kootu prepared out of seven
authentic vegetables, steamed rice, aromatic arachuvecha sambar, kalyana rasam,
mochakottai kuzhambu, ever delicious and everloved appalam and a creamy semiya
and sago payasam was served as dessert.
Sugarcane was made into
small pieces after peeling the outer skin and was distributed to the Sikkim and
Korean students and they relished the sweetness of it. All the girls were
offered jasmine flowers and our students helped them to adorn it in their
heads.
Dr. N. Sethuraman,
Registrar- SRM IST and Dr. V. Ponniah, Dean,
School of Management had graced the occasion .The whole day of
entertaining and enlightening events concluded with the director of SRM
Institute of Hotel Management Dr. D. Antony Ashok Kumar distributing the
mementos to all the students from Korea and Sikkim.
