SRMIST celebrated National Science Day 2020 at Orathur Panchayat Union Middle
School. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

song by students. Ms.S.Kavitha, Head master of school has formally welcomed the
chief guests Ms. Balamani, BEO of Kattankulathur, Mr. Subash, Head of the
village and Dr. V. Thirumurugan, Nodal Officer of UBA SRMIST.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

inaugural address she emphasized the importance of celebrating Science day and
she encouraged students to develop their innovative skills in science and
technologies. She motivated students to take Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam, former
President of India as their role model to become a great scientist like him in
their future.<span style="mso-no-proof: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Dr. V.Thirumurugan, Nodal officer of UBASRMIST has
presided the Science day program and delivered the address. In his Presidential
address he said, SRMIST is one of the very well known higher education
institution in the country and we are active and interest in participating in
events like this. He said SRMIST will always continue their work in development
of villages and Govt. schools.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

students were actively participated in dance. Some students have given Speech
on the theme “Science Day”. Some Students from Neelamangalam Panchayat Union

which was organized by school where they showcased different experiments and
innovations of students. By observing all hard work with different ideas of
students judges categorized first, second and third position of participants.
Then we conducted drawing and essay competition among interested students based
on the theme “Science Day”. Among the best we categorized participants into
first, second and third positions.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

prizes to winner and a certificate to all participants. Finally the Program

This time, Team SRM Green Stabilizers from the Department of Civil Engineering ranked first in the national AICTE - Chhatra Vishwakarma Award – 2019.</span></div>

The team received a certificate and a cash prize of Rs.51,000. The team also ranked first in the ‘Land category’ and received a special mention on how their project was a perfect solution for the problem. </span></div>

<span class="s4" style="font-size: 11px; line-height: 13.199999809265137px;">Their project adopted bio-reinforcement techniques to control soil erosion on bench terraces and irrigation channels. The shoulder bunds and risers of the bench terraces are severely endangered by soil erosion, so the bench terraces and bunds of the irrigation channels were bio-stabilized by planting Vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides) densely. To ensure the results scientifically, the specialized In-situ jet erosion test apparatus has been designed and fabricated for conducting erodability test in the field itself. By conducting In-situ jet erosion test periodically at several bio-reinforced sites, it was found that the control of soil erosion by Vetiver bio-reinforcement is increased b</span><span class="s4" style="font-size: 11px; line-height: 13.199999809265137px;">y 56% in six months and the </span><span class="s4" style="font-size: 11px; line-height: 13.199999809265137px;">strength increase was found to be 62% comparatively with the unreinforced soil. This technique will facilitate the farmers in maintaining bench terraces without any financial hurdles.</span></div>
