CHENNAI: With rainforests being destroyed for the expansion
of fast food outlets and India’s vast cultural biodiversity being run over by
urbanisation, the Indian Biodiversity Congress (IBC) 2014 saw scientists,
academicians and activists from all over India coming together to discuss
various themes.</div>

Over 750 delegates presented papers on climate change, food
security, taxonomy and cultural and linguistic linkages of biodiversity. The
focus of the conference this year was biodiversity for poverty alleviation.</div>

organised by the Centre for Innovation in Science and Social Actions,
Thiruvananthapuram and CPR Environmental Education Centre, Chennai, along with
School of Public Health, SRM University, Chennai and Navdanya, New Delhi.</div>

Biodiversity as the need of the hour is recognised by all,
and as chief project director of Tamil Nadu Biodiversity Conservation and
Greening Project R K Ojha put it:  it is
no longer for compulsion but is now a compulsion. “With India harbouring nearly
seven per cent of the recorded species of the world, representing four of the
34 globally identified biodiversity hotspots, it is a vast repository of
traditional biological knowledge resource,” said K Rosaiah, Governor of Tamil
Nadu, who inaugurated the conference. “Nearly 200 million people are dependent
on forests for their livelihood, and the joint forest management should aim at
regenerating forests through involvement of local communities.”</div>

“We are dredging the top soil and it takes 500 years to
create one inch of new top soil,” said Nandita Krishna, director of CPR
Environmental Education Centre, lamenting on how acres of land are being used
for cattle to be raised for slaughter. “Animal farming should instead be used
to alleviate hunger,” she said. The objective of IBC is to formulate a vision
and alternate strategic plan for the conservation of biodiversity in the
context of the prevailing concept of ‘development at any cost’.</div>

keeps the canteen busy throughout the day.

Location : Near Gate 4(the entrance of the main

delicious food from the canteen attracts the students and the faculty 
members. 

SRM canteen 

Location : Ground Floor of the Techpark 
building Timing : 7.30 AM to 7.30 PM With the capacity of 
over 650 students this canteen operates with two cash counters to manage the 
crowd.

to 4.30 This small outlet offers Coffee, drinks, icecreams, biscuits, 
chocolates, cool drinks, etc.

Hostel Cool Bar 

Location : Near the Oori Hostel block Timing :

CRRI canteen 

Location : Fourth floor of the Medical 
College Timing : 7.30 to 8.30 The canteen is exclusive 
for the final year MBA students 

SRM Dental College Canteen 

Location : Ground floor of the Dental 
College Timing : 7.30 AM to 4.30 AM This canteen is 
almost at the end of the campus, but has the same menu as the other canteens. In 
the morning they serve poori, pongal, idli, samosa, puff and vada. Selvi, 
supervisor of the canteen, said that they also have cool drinks as most of the 
dental patients would like to have them after being treated. 

 
The canteen also serves variety rice and limited meals (Rs 28), chapathi and 
paratha (Rs22) The students can buy chocolates, cool drinks and ice creams from 
here.

SRM Medical College Canteen</h3>

Location : Adjacent to the SRM Medical 
College Timing : 24 Hours SRM Medical College Canteen is 
open 24 hours to cater to the needs of the patients and the doctors' at all odd 
hours. Students from the College of Physiotherapy, Nursing, Engineering come to 
the canteen to pacify their appetite. Noodles and fried rice are served hot even 
after midnight. The doctors and also the patients visit the medical college make 
use of this 24 hour facility. Set in a serene, green atmosphere this canteen did 
not fail to attract the customers. 

 
"All chicken item are sold best in our place", said Mr. K. Durairaj, 
Supervisor, Medical College canteen. In order to help the patients the canteen 
also offer hot water and one could find uninterrupted drinking water supply from 
the Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant. The canteen can accommodate at least 120 
students. For lunch they offer all kinds of variety rice, Chappathi, Paratha, 
etc. Serving at least 150 customers a day, they do sell chocolates, biscuits, 
cool drinks and snacks, too.</div>
