Chennai : President Pranab Mukherjee Friday urged Indian universities
 to offer quality education that meets international benchmark.<br />

"We must change the reality of our universities not figuring in the 
list of top universities of the world. Indian universities should aim at
 becoming top educational institutions in the world with global 
standards of research, teaching and learning," Mukherjee said at the 
convocation of S.R.M. University near here.<br />

He added that with unlimited demands and limited resources, it is 
important that the private sector also contribute to higher education in
 India.<br />

Mukherjee said the private sector has played a key role in higher education in other countries.<br />

"Many top universities, including Harvard, Yale and Stanford, are the
 result of efforts of the private sector. There is no reason why Indian 
private sector cannot achieve similar results," Mukherjee said.<br />

He said private universities should look beyond placements and must 
satisfy citizens that they are taking up the cause of education in 
public service and not for private profit.<br />

According to him, higher education needs a systematic re-look so that
 India can educate larger numbers without diluting academic standards.<br />

"The objectives of reform and change in our higher education system 
must be expansion, excellence and inclusion. It is essential that a 
transparent framework for better service delivery be established in the 
field of private education," Mukherjee said<br />

I am happy to participate in the Convocation of the SRM University. It is a pleasure to be amongst some of the brightest young minds in the country.
2. I am very happy to know that SRM University is today a multi stream university with over 33000 students and 2300 faculty members, offering a wide range of programmes in Engineering, Management, Medicine, Science and Humanities.  Students have a wide choice of cutting edge programmes including nanotechnology, bioinformatics, genetic engineering, remote sensing and GIS embedded systems, computer forensics, etc. to choose from. 
3.  The University has a Sivaji Ganesan Film Institute which offers B.Sc in Film Technology, the first of its kind and an IAS Coaching Academy which offers training for the Civil Services Examinations.  The Community Medicine department runs a rural health centre and an urban health centre. It conducts Health camps frequently and the University has signed an MoU
with the Government of Tamil Nadu for a special Tribal health project.   
4. I believe SRM University is also the first private University in India to design, develop and launch a satellite - the SRMSAT in collaboration with Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).  The SRMSAT has been in orbit since one year and has completed 5173 orbits.  
5. I am delighted to know foreign faculty members, flexible and dynamic curriculum, exciting research and global connections are features that set SRM apart.  In the context of meeting the objectives of higher education in today’s competitive world, the SRM University has played an outstanding role over the past 27 years.
Ladies and Gentlemen, 
6. The country’s economic progress is dependent on several critical factors.  The quality of our human resources is amongst the most important of them. Higher education is the key to making available a large pool of skilled manpower for our nation.
Higher education not only decides a student’s career prospects, but also shapes his or her personality.  
7. Our country’s education system is burdened with demands of both quantity and quality.  The numbers of students who seek admissions in universities today far exceed the capacity of government educational institutions. We need many more universities to be able to address the demands of higher education. And along with quantity, we also need to focus on quality. 
8. The standards of higher education in India today need improvement.  In ancient India, we had universities like Nalanda and Takshashila which had established themselves as international centers of educational excellence where students from all over the world came and studied. In contrast, many Indian students today choose to go abroad for higher studies. 
9. We need universities to provide quality education that meet international benchmarks.  We must change the reality of our Universities not figuring in the list of top universities of the world.  Indian universities should aim at becoming top educational institutions in the world with global standards of
research, teaching and learning.  With unlimited demands and limited resources, it is important that the private sector also contributes its best to the provision of higher education in India. The private sector has played a key role in higher education in other countries across the world. Many top universities including Harvard, Yale and Stanford are the result of efforts of the private sector. There is no reason why Indian private sector cannot achieve similar results.
10. In India, students and parents are often skeptical of private universities. They prefer education in old and established public universities as opposed to private universities which are mostly newly built. To build the trust of the people, private universities must constantly prove themselves because they do not have the benefit of age. They must be able to promise a good future to the students and make sure that they fulfill all of their promises. I am happy to learn that this University has been able to secure good placements for its graduates. While I congratulate the University and the graduates for this, I must also point out that universities should have a vision beyond placements. Universities must satisfy the citizens that they are taking up the cause of education not for private profit but in public service. As
Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, the founder of Banaras Hindu University has said Universities should not merely turn out men and women as engineers, scientists, doctors, merchants, theologists, but also as people of high character, probity and honour, whose conduct through life would show that they bear the hallmark of a great university.  Of course, financial resources are an important consideration for all universities.  But, there must be a vision to create a world class institute and to nurture young people who will change the world into a better place for all of us.
11. Higher education has made significant contribution to economic development, social progress and political democracy in independent India. But there is serious cause for concern at this juncture. As we stand on the threshold of the XII th Five Year Plan, challenges continue to exist with respect to quality and the provision of relevant education. Curricular reforms leading to regular revision and upgrading of curricula, introduction of semester system, choice-based credit system, and examination reforms are yet to take place in many higher educational institutions across the country. There is a clear, almost unanimous, view that higher education needs a
systematic re-look, so that India can educate much larger numbers without diluting academic standards. 
12. The objectives of reform and change in our higher education system must be expansion, excellence and inclusion.  I understand that the private sector today accounts for about four-fifths of enrolment in professional higher education. The standards of education, however, vary from institute to institute. It is essential that a transparent framework for better service delivery be established in the field of private education.  The regulatory mechanism should facilitate accreditation of all educational institutions with clarity on incentives and consequences in order to improve quality, to ensure minimum benchmarks and to promote excellence in higher education.
13. Shortage of good faculty is a matter of serious concern.  While the requisite number of good quality teachers cannot be made available overnight, we must tackle the problem by bringing in innovative teaching methodologies such as technology-enabled learning and collaborative information and communication technologies. Our teachers must be exposed to larger number of refresher courses and seminars so as to be up-to-date with the latest concepts in their discipline.
14. The SRM University has made a name for itself by imparting quality higher education in the private sector. It should now strive to spread to other Institutions in the country some of its models of teaching and curricula which are novel and can be emulated.  The international advisory board it has established which advices the University on research, curricula and teaching methodology as well as the corporate advisory board which evaluates its engineering and management programmes based on industry trends, are important innovations which need to be adopted by others.  The SRM University’s programme of arranging opportunities for its students and faculty to meet Nobel Laureates is also worthy of special mention in this regard. 
15. I congratulate the Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, faculty members, and non-teaching staff of SRM University on their achievements and wish the University continued success in grooming young men and women to emerge as leaders in their chosen walks of life.  As I have already pointed out, education should be seen as a stepping stone to character building and societal development. I hope that all of you will work diligently in future and contribute meaningfully towards nation-building.  I urge each one of you graduating today to always remember that
your mission in life should be to wipe every tear from every eye, as exhorted by the father of our nation, Mahatma Gandhi.  
16. Let me conclude quoting once again, Mahamana Pt. Madan Mohan Malviya Ji, who, in a convocation address to the Banaras Hindu University, said, “Continue your studies throughout your life.  Be just and fear none.  Fear only to do that which is ill and ignoble.  Stand up for right.  Love to serve your fellow-men.  Love the motherland.  Promote public weal.  Do good wherever you get a chance for it.  Love to give whatever you can spare.”

SRM University won the All-India Inter University 
volleyball tournament after defeating Calicut University in three 
straight sets 25-20, 25-23, 25-20 here on Saturday.</div>

 The
 encounter was hardly a close one in spite of the score suggesting 
otherwise. In the first set, SRM raced ahead to a 21-13 lead but 
stumbled slightly before recovering to win by 25 points to 20.</div>
<div class="body">
 The second set was the only phase of the match where Calicut managed to match the SRM men.</div>
<div class="body">
It was on par at 16-16 at one point, with L.S. Arjunnath catching the eye.</div>
<div class="body">
However,
 the SRM trio of K. Ragul, V. Sathish Kumar and M. Vigneshwaran, with 
some crucial blocks and smashes, helped secure the set 25-23.</div>

 The
 men from Kerala added to their own misery by exposing large portions of
 the court in the centre for SRM to exploit with deft drops.</div>

 For Calicut, the problem persisted even in the third set. But SRM failed to take charge, with its serve proving wobbly.</div>

Edupreneurs Award'12 </h2>
The number of quality educational institutions in the state is an 
indication of progress being made in the higher education system. It's 
safely assumed that Tamil Nadu is indeed emerging as the education 
capital of the country.

The Times of India Group sought to honour some of the Pioneering 
entrepreneurs in the field of education, from the state, through an 
event at the newly lunched ITC Grand Chola in Guindy, on <strong>Friday 28sept 2012</strong>. called Edupreneurs, the event saw some of the biggest names in the state's private education landscape receiving top honours.

The event was presided over by His Excellency <strong>Dr K.Rosaiah</strong>, Governor of Tamil Nadu, Who also launched a coffee table book, titled <strong>"Edupreneurs"</strong>.

SRM University signs MoU with ISTE

The SRM University and the Indian  Society for Technical Education 
(ISTE) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for publishing 
five International Journals pertaining to Engineering streams.      The 
MoU was signed by ISTE President Dr R Murugesan  and SRM University 
Pro-Vice Chancellor T P Ganesan at  a function held in the city.      As
 per the MoU, SRM and ISTE would publish five  International Journals in
 Civil Engineering, Mechanical  Engineering, Electrical, Electronics and
 Communication  Engineering, Computer sciences and Basic Sciences.      
"Every Journal will have four issues a year and the first issue will be 
released during the ISTE's 42nd Annual Convention to be held in 
Hyderabad in December this year," Mr Murugesan and Mr Ganesan said.     
 Mr Murugesan said SRM would print 1250 copies of e to start with. 
"Depending on the subscriber base, the  number of copies will be scaled 
up," he added.      Both the Faculty and students of SRM, research 
scholars  and those from the Industry would contribute to the  journal.</div>

<h3>A Show of Speed and Design</h3>It was a show of speed and design when budding engineers of  India's leading colleges raced cars designed by themselves. However,  leaving behind more than 60 teams from across the country, F-1 racing  car prototype made by students of SRM University, Chennai, proved to be  the best on all criteria at a competitive event.<br />
The second edition of 'Maruti Suzuki supported Supra SAE 2012' at the  Buddh International Circuit in Noida saw participation of over 2000  young and enthusiastic engineering students. During the four-day event,  these cars underwent several rounds of dynamic and static evaluation  including brake test, skid-pad testing and acceleration testing. <br />
The teams who passed in these tests were then tested in the autocross  section, where they drove fast in a controlled manner to showcase the  manoeuvrability of the car. <br />
Once finished with the autocross section, the teams were given four  litres of petrol for two laps on the circuit. Over all, the cars were  tested on parameters like vehicle robustness, endurance, and safety.<br />
Pritam Reddy, captain of the winning team of 25, said, "We won  because we had finished designing the car four months before the event.  We utilised the time in testing our car on all criteria and  modifications. Last year, our car could not qualify the endurance test.  We worked day and night on that front throughout the year."<br />
Vishnu Prasad and Shidhartha Kumar of the team drove the car in the  event. The team includes students of electrical engineering, mechanical  engineering, automobile engineering, electronics and communication  engineering. While all the teams were asked to make some modification in  their cars, the one designed by his team was found impeccable. <br />
Cars designed by Sri Krishna Engineering team from Coimbatore and  Sinhgad Academy of Engineering from Pune, bagged the second and third  position respectively. After the winners were declared, I V Rao,  executive advisor, Maruti Suzuki India said,  "I am impressed with the  high quality of car prototypes created by the teams this year. <br />
Considering this was the first exposure for many of these students,  they have displayed exemplary knowledge and expertise in automotive  engineering. I am confident that this group of youngsters will play a  crucial role in the Indian automobile industry in the coming times of  high growth."<br />
The competition started with 63 teams making it to the first round of  static evaluation of which only 25 teams could make it to the final  round for dynamic testing on the Formula-1 tracks after stringent  technical inspections and scrutiny.<br />
"It is a dream come true. Participating and winning in such an event  will give us an edge. We already know how F-1 cars are designed, what is  team management and how automobile industry works," said Pritam, an  automobile engineer.</div>

Named Aaruush ‘12, the event  has students from 700 colleges from across the nation and 60 countries  participating in it. <br />
The programme will feature 41 events, including a car and bike  exhibition, a tech expo and an air show, with some having interesting  names such as Yudamme and Blue-book.<br />
Welcoming the gathering, varsity vice-chancellor Dr M Ponnavaikko  detailed about the innovations and achievements of the university.<br />
Dr P Sivakumar, Director, CVRDE, Ministry of Defence, Govt of India, in  his keynote address, made a presentation on the innovations and  technical competence of the DRDO and CVRDE. He urged the student  community to take up research and join defence research establishments  to achieve their goals.<br />
Meanwhile, on the sidelines of the function, Dr Ponnavaiko announced  that Dr V K Saraswat, Director General of DRDO and Chief Scientific  Advisor to the Defence Minister, will be conferred with a honorary  doctorate for his contributions in missile technology, during the  institution’s forthcoming convocation in October.<br />
A key feature of the event is an exhibition by DRDO showcasing the  defence and avionic advancements of the nation. Many university  officials, including pro vice-chancellor Dr P Ganesan, registrar Dr N  Sethuraman, and director (E&T) Dr C Muthamizhselvan were present.  Prizes worth Rs 15 lakh await the participants.<br />
Another event, ‘Rising in the Spirit of Innovation’, a national-level  techno-management festival organised in association with the Indian  Society for Technical Education (ISTE) and Institute of Electricals and  Electronics Engineers (IEEE) at the varsity, will be on till September  8.</div>

Sweety  named the space vehicle she and her team designed in Marathi as Nav  Kshitij Vahak, a commercial earth-to-orbit passenger space vehicle. This  is the only team selected from India among 100 teams from 65  universities in the world. The team, led by Sweety, included Joel Alex  Roy, Anku Aravind, Jeevaraj Hejmady, Sarnavi Mahesh, Rajdeep Chowdhuri,  Ravikumar Shakya and Rishabh Bana. <br />

Sweety had earlier presented  two research papers at the International Conference of Mechanical and  Aerospace Engineering, Paris, which have been published in international  journals. <br />

She was awarded by NASA for her dolphin-shaped  eco-friendly aircraft working on less fuel, producing less noise, and  using very short runway for landing. </div></div><br />
