Delivering the sixth convocation address at the SRM University at its campus in suburban Kattankulathur, he said the recent tendency by most of the varsities to add programmes with the aim of generating more funds must stop. ''There is a need to revamp the entire university system and define the size, scope and operation of universities very clearly,'' he added. ''Universities in India need to be made more 'universal' if they are to flourish,'' he noted. Mr Moily said about 16,000 colleges were affiliated to 400-odd universities (excluding deemed and self-financed) aided by the Central and the State governments. ''Most of the states are opening up establishment of private universities to plug the gap between the need and availability of institutions for higher learning,'' he said, adding, ''barring a few exceptions, our universities are not universal in nature.'' Stating the latest ranking of world universities showed that India has a long way to go in higher education, Mr Moily said ''the once proud university system, the best in Asia after the Second World War, has fallen on very bad times.'' He said it's not that the Indian University Education has languished altogether. ''The IITs (even though they have a lot to answer for), IIMs and a host of other universities such as Delhi and JNU have brought high quality higher education to India. Observing that the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and the IIT Kharagpur were the only two Indian institutions figure in the Shanghai Jiao Tong University's 2010 edition of Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), Mr Moily said, ''it is a poor reflection of our universities, more than 480 in number, knowing that the Indian education system has produced some of the finest brains in the world, who are doing wonders in their respective fields.'' Calling upon the students to be the stewards and custodian of rich heritage of this nation, Mr Moily, quoting US President Barrack Obama who conquered the limitation of his environment and rose above the set line, wanted the students to draw a lesson from his life. At the convocation, which was presided over by SRM University Chancellor T R Pachamuthu, eminent scientist and Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister Dr Prof C N R Rao was conferred with the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) and Tata Consultancy Services CEO N Chandrasekaran the Doctor of Literature. University Vice-Chancellor Prof P Sathyanarayanan presented the annual report of the university. In all 5,155 students from 89 disciplines, including 129 rank holders were awarded UG, PG and Diploma certificates, besides five doctotrates in the convocation. Divyans Mahansaria of the Computer Science Engineering stream was awarded the Corporation Bank’s Gold medal for the best outgoing student. </div>

A batch of 34 students from SRM University, Kattankulathur, will be leaving the shores of India to study one full semester in foreign universities, including prestigious educational institutions. The students have been selected under the Semester Abroad Programme. Some of the premier universities include the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Birmingham City and Lancaster Universities in United Kingdom and La Trobe and University of Western Australia. On Wednesday, Bryan Dalton, Chief of Consular Services, US Consulate General, Chennai interacted with students at a programme in SRM University. He pointed out that among all the foreign students studying in the US, Indians were in a majority. There were 1.03 lakh students specialising in different streams, mostly in engineering and science and technology, in addition to the humanities and arts, in various universities. This number was bound to increase by 15 per cent now. The best minds He said that spending an entire semester would pit young minds against the best from various countries all over the world. “You should come out of your comfort zone,” he remarked. Later, in a brief chat with reporters, Mr. Dalton said the number of people submitting false documents and other records for obtaining a visa was a small minority. “I appeal to people to avoid touts and come straight to us with original documents, else they would permanently lose eligibility to visit the US,” he said. Between October 2008 and September 2009, 1.96 lakh people had visited the US through the US Consul General, Chennai. Sixth batch A release said the 34 students were part of the sixth batch selected under the Semester Abroad Programme and the next batch of 45 students have been selected and would be leaving in January next year.

Intuition should be encouraged among students as it would help them come out with innovative ideas, said IIT Madras director Professor M S Ananth on Tuesday. Inaugurating Aaruush'10, a four-day national level techno-management festival, organised by SRM (Deemed) University, at Kattankulathur, Ananth said the concept had not taken root among the younger generation, especially students. "A combination of logic and intuition would help students not only succeed in their careers but also in life," he said. On the role of innovations, he said that unlike in other countries India was far behind in terms of the number of foreign students in universities and other educational institutions. The congregation of different minds from across the world would help get innovative ideas. SRM university vice-chancellor P Satyanarayanan said over 7,500 students from across the country were expected. Workshops like AutoBotz and Swarm robotics as well as defence exhibitions will be held. Radhakrishnan on Monday said the flight- testing of the indigenous cryogenic stage of the Geo Stationary Launch Vehicle (GSLV) D3 would be conducted in April. The vehicle would carry GAST-4, a communication satellite, he told reporters after receiving an honorary degree of Doctor of Science during the 5th convocation at the SRM University in Kattankulathur. “Though we had several GSLV flights, we were using the Russian cryogenic stages,” he said. As far as cryogenic engine and stages were concerned, ISRO had tested engines for 7,500 seconds. “We have qualified the stage. The entire stage was filled and fired for its entire duration of 720 seconds at [the Liquid Propulsion Centre in] Mahendragiri in Tamil Nadu and it was very successful,” Dr. Radhakrishnan said. the hindu-news Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar today exhorted students to guard against social evils like gender discrimination, dowry system, domestic violence and female foeticide. Delivering the Fifth Convocation address of SRM University at the suburban Kattankulathur near here, she said as educated youngsters, the students had a ''great obligation'' to strive for social change, be it directly or indirectly. ‘’We should be able to motivate others by inculcating in them the need to overcome centuries-old prejudices which had no relevance in today’s world’’, she said, adding, the ground reality was that there was a social chasm on the basis of caste, creed, class, gender, geography and language. These divisive forces should be weakened through a concerted effort. ‘’We need a concerted effort to bring about a social change which can weaken these divisive forces, strengthen unity and accelerate our march for national progress, she said. Calling for incorporating aspects of humanities into the curriculum of science specialisations, she said at present the humanities were increasingly adopting a scientif approach in their research methodologies and subject specializations. ‘’There is a need to humanise science disciplines to inculcate in the impressionable minds of students, a perspective about the individual, the society, the nation and the world. ‘’Every educated youngster should have a perspective about how our polity works and what our Constittuion seeks to achieve for the nation’’, she exhorted. Calling for an integrated approach by combining science with humanity to understand the society, she said such an approach would help the education system to produce men and women of disciplined minds and restrained manners. On the role of teachers, Ms Meira Kumar said teachers, apart from generating an intellectual environment, should also create among students a thirst for knowledge. ‘’They should devise ways and means of transforming our children into socially useful and productive members of the society. The learning process must be a harmonious blend of academic excellence and human development.'' In all, 4,519 students from 86 disciplines were awarded Under- Graduate, Post Graduate and Diploma certificates, including nine Doctorates at the convocation ceremony. Of them 3,172 were men and 1,347 women. There were a total of 124 Rank holders. Mr Prashantha Battacharya of B.Tech Computer science was awarded the Corporation Bank’s gold Medal for the best outgoing student. ‘Celebrating life’ is the theme of Milan. SRM shares this joy with under privileged children. As a prelude to Milan, every year SRM organizes an annual event - 'Butterflies' which many government school teachers and students look forward to. SRM buses pick up 500 students from around 25 schools from Chengelpet and Kancheepuram. They are given welcome drink and snacks. A host of events such as sports, literary and cultural events are conducted. Children get gifts, winners receive their medals and certificates from the victory stand. Film celebrities are invited to give away the awards for this event. The school children leave the campus in evening hours with a great experience, aspiration and vigour to study well and dream to pursue a college education which is the main objective of Butterflies. Natya Mayuri Sudha Chandran, the veteran dancer/actor is the brand ambassador for Butterflies’10.
