<span style="font-family: Calibri;">InfySEC’s E-Hack was a phenomenal workshop aimed at
educating people on hacking and cyber threats.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">InfySEC, which specialises in training and consulting on
information security, hosted E-Hack, the world’s largest ethical hacking event
at SRM University.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Vinod Senthil, director and chief technical officer at
InfySEC, commented on why events like these are important. <o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">“If there is going to be a World War III ever, it is likely
to be about computers, data and networks. It is our responsibility to let the
end-users know about day-to-day attacks and suggest ways to protect against
cyber threats. The best way to do this with the highest impact is to conduct a
pan Indian workshop such as E-Hack,” he says. <o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Packed with almost 9,000 people, there was barely enough
space for the organisers to sneak past the tight security. <o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Apart from those who travelled from places like Shimla and
Uttar Pradesh, nearly two lakh viewers saw the event through the live webcast.
InfySEC conducted E-Hack x10ded in other locations around the world, including
the Rotary Club of Mysore and the University of California, Berkeley. <o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">By roping in eminent speakers to address the audience
(Karthikeyan Murugesan, founder of Zazvik Solutions; Santhosh Srinivasan,
director of Symantec; Patrick Martinent, a Google developer expert, among
others), conducting workshops, and offering attractive prizes for various contests,
the Chennai-based ethical hacking company ensured that its participants got the
most out of this experience.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Though the event itself was aimed at “educating and taking a
less known field to the masses,” the event got its fair share of recognition.
E-Hack left its mark in the Asia Book of Records, the Indian Book of Records as
well as the Tamil Nadu Book of Records. “This shows that we are moving in the
right path in our efforts to educate the end users,” says Vinod.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Organising something on the scale of E-Hack could not have
come without its own set of hurdles. “Our biggest problem was finding a venue.
For an auditorium, we were talking in numbers that are multiples of 10,000,”
says Vinod. <o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">“We also faced issues online with regard to the bandwidth,
network usage and computer process usage despite using prominent cloud
providers for our vulnerable applications.”<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">With an event of this size and innovation, it is difficult
to pinpoint a USP. While the organising team hopes that it is the learning that
participants took away at the end of the day, the contestants differ.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">“I have been to a few hackathons before but they had only
between 50 and 100 people. It is a completely enriching feeling to be
surrounded by other geeks who are thinking about technology as much as you,”
says Gopi Haran, a participant. InfySEC’s E-Hack managed to draw crowds from
all around the world and unite them for a single objective — to be inquisitive
about securing ourselves and to empower ourselves against potential cyber vulnerability.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">The third Thamizh Academy awards, instituted by the SRM University, was  presented under 11 categories recently. The event coincided with the birthday celebrations of SRM Group of Institutions Founder Chairman and Chancellor T R Pachamuthu.

Pachamuthu and Academy Chairman and SRM University Vice-Chancellor M Ponnavaiko presented the cash awards worth Rs 20.50 lakh to the recipients at a function held on the university campus in suburban Kattankulathur. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> The awards were instituted by the SRM University in 2011 in line with the Sahitya Akademi awards of the Central Government with higher cash component to honour eminent  tamil scholars, researchers and authors in recognition of their contribution to the growth and development of Tamil language. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> Though 10 awards were given during the last two editions, this year a new category ‘Vipulanandar Award’ was added and was given to an author, who had published Tamil books in abroad.

The award, carrying a cash component of Rs 1.5 lakh, was given to author A Muthulingam for his Tamil book titled ‘Amerikakkari’.</span></div>

Under the aegis of the university, the Tamil Academy is engaged in the development of Tamil language, literature, arts and research. It provides online education in Tamil language, Tamil religious studies and various other diploma programmes and book-publishing opportunities as well. Every year, the academy  distributes awards worth `20 lakh to scholarly works under 11 categories such as fiction, essay collection, children’s literature and research.<br />
This year, under the category of ‘Pudhumaippithan Fiction Literature Award’ and ‘Bharathiar Poetry Award’, 111 books each were recommended for awards. Under ‘Azha Valliappa Children Literature’ category, there were 88 books, ‘G U Pope Translation Literature’—28 books, ‘Pe Na Appusamy Science Literature’—29 books, ‘Anandakumarasamy Fine Arts Literature’—8 books and ‘Muthuthandavar Thamizhisai Award’ category—8 books that were recommended.<br />
Under the ‘Developmental Tamil Award category’, 18 books and in ‘Vibulanandar Fiction Literature Award’ category, 35 books were recommended.<br />
Addressing reporters, Ponnavaiko said that the selection procedure involved a number of steps. After three to four rounds of assessment, which is done by scholars belonging to the respective fields, the final list is prepared.<br />
Besides awarding the erudite literary works, the academy also presents awards to two Tamil scholars — ‘Parithimaar Kalaingnar’ and ‘Paarivendhar Painthamizh Award’. This year, 30 and 32 scholars were recommended for these awards respectively and Kovai Gnani and Thamizhannal were chosen.<br />
The awards will be presented at a function to be held at the SRM University, Kattankulathur, on August 24.</div>

<span style="font-size: large;">The University Rover Challenge is a Mars Society-organized robotics competition for college students who design and build the next generation mars rovers that have the potential to work alongside human explorers in the field.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"> The annual competition is held at the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) near Hanksville, Utah. This year, 2013 URC was won by the third two-time champion from Poland, the Hyperion Team of Bialystok University of Technology, who finished off with a record of 490 points, outsourcing the nearest competitor by 91 points. The year 2013 saw the highest ever number of registrants, as many as 15 teams, representing different Universities across the US and Europe, and the first ever Asian team from SRM University, India with their prototype of the rover, 'Rudra.'</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"> The rover is judged in the four competition tasks, the sample return task, astronaut assistance task, terrain traversing task, presentation task. The terrain traversing task, a new event for 2013, provided the most excitement for teams and judges alike. Rovers had to race across a variety of terrain through a series of five gates. After starting with a pass through soft, sandy ground to Gate 1, through Gate 2. Another rocky pass through Gate 3 lead to increasingly steep climbs through the fourth and fifth gates. While several teams made the climb to Gate 4, most lost traction and slid down the steep hillside. Only Hyperion's rover was able to climb through the final gate during the competition.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"> While team SRM wasn't really successful in passing through all the Gates, it surely did impress the judges in the sample return task with their analytical skills. Before travelling to the United States, the team calibrated their equipment using soil samples from extreme locations from India." The techniques," says, Naren GK, a final year Biotechnology student on the team, "that we employed in detecting the signs of life, the use of laser-induced fluorescent imaging methods to detect cyanobacteria, seemed to have impressed the panel."</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"> Teams are allowed to operate their rovers from designated command and control stations, where a team is involved with controlling the rover through wireless communications methods, as the rover runs in an MDRS field site located in the desert of southern Utah.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"> While the 36-kg Rudra seemed to have given the team an advantage in terms of its stability, power capacity and its terrain traversing abilities what it seemed to lack was the design, fabrication and lack of equipments on the rover and on the communications centre. Jagadeesh RB, a Computer Science engineering student, who's in charge of the communication with the rover hopes to the WPC grants them permission for certain fabrications that are needed for the better performance of the rover on the field.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">A new academic is here and so are new ideas, thoughts and conceptions. With the zeal and ardour to give life to various innovations, that are the first of their kind, the students of SRM University are organizing the country's first ever Power and Energy fest, Epiphany.

The story goes on like this, a few students pursuing their nuclear engineering, intrigued by the amount of carbon footprint that the present forms of energy are leaving behind and the fact that these fossil fuels apart from being the highest form of pollutants, are fast depleting, felt a dire need to look for other cleaner forms of energy.

Necessity is the mother of invention, they say, and rightly going by the saying, the students organizing the fest say that the need to find a clean, carbon-free and cost effective form of energy has led one to exploring the possibilities of geo-thermal and nuclear energy. Epiphany was created with a view of instigating in the minds of the young, the ideas of innovation and sustainability. A two-day fest, Epiphany'13 aims at educating the young minds on these issues and spreading awareness on the same.

The fest has a variety of events and workshops to cater to the interests of the students. The main attraction being the exhibition by IGCAR (Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research) that aims at conducting broad based multidisciplinary programme of scientific research and advanced engineering by showcasing various radiation detection meters and environment survey monitors. Among other events are events like iEXPO which invites students to submit abstracts on related subjects, and a Youth Nuclear Summit, a diplomatic event that focuses on International nuclear related issues such as nuclear proliferation and possible threat of nuclear terrorism.

And to keep the fest from turning monotonous, there are other events that make sure the fun part doesn't go out of the equation. To test your mental agility and oratory skills, there are events like 'Verbal Brawl' and 'Quiriosty,' a quizzing event. And to all those gaming fanatics out there, events based on gaming and treasure hunt, like 'Gladiator's Arena' and 'Trezoro Casi' are something to look forward to.

With high hopes pinned on this fest, the secretary, a 4th year Nuclear Engineering student, Tanushree Sharma, says that, this is first of the many steps that we intend to take in understanding and spreading the word on nuclear power, which is the most misunderstood source of energy. The fest with the main motto of promoting nuclear power and energy with deviating from its use a potential nuclear power is to be scheduled on the 13th and 14th o f August, 2013.</span></div>

'Face-Off' on the cricket pitch- Intra college cricket tournament.

<span style="font-size: large;">The tournament first started when the departments of Computer Science and Electronics and Communications competed within their different divisions, which eventually led to a final face-off between the winning teams of the respective departments. To make this concept bigger and better, the students of these departments have organized this cricket tournament.

To make it a tournament in every sense the word, there's prize money for the winning team and an entry fee for every team that wishes to take part in the tournament. With an entry fee of Rs. 1200 for a team of 11 players, the prize money amounts up to Rs. 5000. Satyaki Ganguly, a 3rd year ECE(Electronics and Communication Engineering) student, who has been paramount to the planning of this tournament, says that this has made my college life something to look forward to, as we now take out time after college and during weekends for the matches, I'm glad that the initiative has taken shape.' And now you can find the likes of Satyaki, more on the Valliammai grounds, where the matches are taking place.
