freedom fighters who's contributions have missed the hype of media and the text
book writers but in no way lesser to those who's names you would have learnt in
schools. Let me start with three valliant ladies.</span></b><span style="color: #00b0f0; font-family: "Tahoma",sans-serif;"></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 27.0pt; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<b><span style="background: white; color: #0070c0; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 14.0pt;">Velu Nachiyar</span></b><span style="background: white; color: #252525; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 14.0pt;"> was the
princess of Ramanathapuram and the only child of Raja Chellamuthu Sethupathy
and Rani Sakandhimuthal. </span><span style="color: #4c4a4a; font-family: "Tahoma",sans-serif; font-size: 14.0pt;">The first queen to have ever actively opposed the British rule
and who fought against the colonial rulers many years before the Sepoy Mutiny.</span><span style="background: white; color: #252525; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 14.0pt;"> She was a scholar in many languages and she had proficiency
with languages like French, English and Urdu. She formed an army alligned
with<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>Hyder Ali and<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>in 1780, successfully fought the British.
When Velu Nachiyar found the place where the British stored their ammunition,
she arranged a suicide attack: a faithful follower, </span><span style="color: black; font-family: "Calibri",sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;"><span style="background: white; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 14.0pt;">Kuyili</span></span><span style="background: white; color: #252525; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 14.0pt;">, doused herself in oil, set herself alight and walked into
the storehouse.</span><sup><span style="background: white; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt;"></span></sup><span style="background: white; color: #252525; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 14.0pt;"> Velu Nachiyar formed a woman's army named
"udaiyaal" in honour of her adopted daughter — Udaiyaal, who died
detonating a British arsenal. Nachiar was one of the few rulers who regained
her kingdom and ruled it for ten more years.</span><span style="color: black; font-family: "Calibri",sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;"></span></div>

<span style="background: white; color: #4f81bd; font-family: "Tahoma",sans-serif; font-size: 14.0pt;">1820 – 7 April 1879), also known as </span><span style="background: white; font-family: "Tahoma",sans-serif; font-size: 14.0pt;">Begum</span><span style="background: white; color: #4f81bd; font-family: "Tahoma",sans-serif; font-size: 14.0pt;"> of </span><span style="color: #4f81bd; font-family: "Tahoma",sans-serif; font-size: 14.0pt;"><span style="background: white;">Awadh</span><span style="background: white;">, was the first wife of</span></span><span style="background: white; font-family: "Tahoma",sans-serif; font-size: 14.0pt;">Nawab</span><span style="background: white; color: #4f81bd; font-family: "Tahoma",sans-serif; font-size: 14.0pt;"> </span><span style="color: #4f81bd; font-family: "Tahoma",sans-serif; font-size: 14.0pt;"><span style="background: white;">Wajid Ali Shah</span><span style="background: white;">.
She rebelled against the British East India Company during the </span></span><span style="background: white; font-family: "Tahoma",sans-serif; font-size: 14.0pt;">Indian
Rebellion of 1857</span><span style="background: white; color: #4f81bd; font-family: "Tahoma",sans-serif; font-size: 14.0pt;"> and seized control of Lucknow. </span><span style="color: #4f81bd; font-family: "Tahoma",sans-serif; font-size: 14.0pt;">She
protested against the obliteration of places of worship by the East India
Company, and thus, along with Raja Jailal Singh, led a huge army against the
British forces.</span></div>

<span style="background: white; color: #333333; font-family: "Tahoma",sans-serif; font-size: 14.0pt;">She was a Naga spiritual and political leader who led a
revolt against the British rule in India . At the age of 13, she joined
the Heraka religious movement that her cousin had initiated, which later turned
into a political movement that tried to drive the British away from
Manipur and nearby Naga regions. She was 16 at the time of her arrest, and was
put into life imprisonment by the British. Five years later, in 1937, Nehru
visited and promised to get her out and gave her the title <i>‘Rani’.</i> She
was released in 1947 after which she continued to work for the community.
She was also awarded a Padma Bhushan.</span><span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Tahoma",sans-serif; font-size: 14.0pt;"></span></div>

Diamond Venkayya for his knowledge on diamond mining. He was an authority in
geology, agriculture and also an educationalist. His major contribution to the
movement was the design of the national flag of India, which was first modified

freedom fighter has been long forgotten, despite having given his life taking
part in the independence movement. He insisted on holding the national flag of
India, irrespective of the fact that at that time, it was prohibited by the
British government. It was during the same protest march that he succumbed to
the injuries caused by the police force.</span></div>

was  the time, when people with enormous wealth feared the British raj and

he is popularly known, started a shipping service to compete against British

against the Swadeshi shipping company started by freedom fighter
V.O.Chidambaram Pillai. On 17 June 1911, Ashe<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> 
</span>was on his way to Kodaikanal. He boarded the train 9-30 a.m. Maniyachi
Mail at Tirunelveli junction. And it reached Maniachi where he was shot
point blank by <b>Vanchinathan</b> who committed suicide after that. He was

The Silver Jubilee reunion of the 1987-91 batch of SRM
Engineering College alumni was conducted in a gala gathering at the SRM
University Auditorium on 13.8.2016. The alumni and the University authorities
planned for over a year for the event’s success. The Chancellor of SRM

SRM 1991 Batch2 In his address, Dr Paarivendhar, Chancellor
said that the strength of the University depended on the welfare of its alumni
and that they are the real resources. Their role is vital as University
rankings also depend on the alumni’s inputs. He exhorted the alumni to attend

The alumni are well-established in several spheres of life
in India and abroad. They range from CEOs to entrepreneurs. A highlight of the
occasion was the donation of Rs 4.5 lakhs by the alumni to the University for
Scholarships and guest lectures. This was well appreciated. The alumni said
they are very proud to be a part of SRM and to be able to give back to the

It was the time to take a stroll down memory lane. SRM
University Alumni Reunion of 1987-1991 Batch from Civil, Mechanical and
Computer Science Departments. The get-together started with a grand
recollection of college life memories, success stories, exchange of greetings
between family members of Alumni, sharing respect and gratitude to their
teaching staff and Management.<o:p></o:p></div>

Pro-Vice Chancellor, Dr. T. P Ganesan, offered his welcome
address. His speech moved the audience into their good old days they had spent
in SRM University. He expressed his utmost happiness in welcoming the alumni
who had met after 25 years after completing their graduation at SRM and took
pride to announce the increasing number of Alumni membership that had reached
more than 11000 till date. There raised big hand of applause from the audience
while mentioning that ‘there is a lot of emotional attachment a student has
when it comes to a get-together like alumni reunion’.  He was very happy to declare that SRM
University has been shining in the clouds with rising many number of students
placed in top notch companies. While concluding his speech, Pro-Vice Chancellor
expressed his opinion that he expects more and more alumni to extend their
support for the growth of the University.<o:p></o:p></div>

Followed by Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof.R. Venkataramani,
Director (Alumni Affairs) delivered his special address to the audience. He
congratulated everyone for keeping in track with alumni activities and
mentioned that SRM University has been planning in a big way to expand alumni
database and encouraged them to stay in touch through social media features
like Facebook, LinkedIn, etc. Some of the teaching staff also expressed their
happiness and gratitude to meet the old students after a long time.<o:p></o:p></div>

The show was further graced with the arrival of Founder
Chancellor, Dr. T. R. Paarivendhar. In his special address he thanked everyone
from the alumni 1987-1991 batch for the support they share till date and asked
them to correspond to the University for placement and internship opportunities
for SRM University Students. He stated that he is willing to do all the
possible contributions for SRM alumni and presented mementos to the members of
organizing committee.<o:p></o:p></div>

Everyone from the 1991 batch alumni meet introduced
themselves and many of them stated that they would provide internship and
placement opportunities for students from SRM University. An amount of Rs 4.5

SRM University’s Next Tech Lab Wins iTech '16 Hackathon

Four students from SRM University’s Kattankulathur
 campus have won ITC’s major flagship ‘iTech 2016’ competition, an 
annual technology innovation and co-creation platform aimed at promoting
 entrepreneurship. The second in the series by ITC was a  30 hour 
hackathon on Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR), held in 
the company’s Bangalore campus on July 16 and 17, 2016. The four 
intrepid IT whiz kids from SRM - Anshuman Pandey, Aditthya 
Ramakrishnan, Rohan Pooniwala and Raghav Gupta raced to the top, bagging
 Rs 3 lakhs in prize money.</div>
<div class="rtejustify">
The students created a history of sorts. It’s the 
first time a student team has won the prestigious hackathon beating 
professional teams from across the country. The competition was strong 
with established AR/VR startups participating. The elimination round saw
 45 teams make it to the finals, from over 1700 teams who applied. The 
climb to the top was arduous, but success did not elude them, as they 
made it to the Top 5 with a demo of their work. After the dust had 
settled, the SRM team emerged on top, walking away with the cash prize 
from Ms. Sushma Rajagopalan, MD and CEO - ITC Infotech.</div>
<div class="rtejustify">
The hackathon provided participants the 
opportunity to convert ideas into prototypes, addressing a host of 
crowd-sourced business challenges from Manufacturing, Consumer Goods, 
Retail, Hospitality, Education, Stationery, Banking, Financial Services 
and Insurance and Agriculture sectors. The Winning team from SRM 
University, created a mixed reality smartphone app, ‘NOMI’, a short form
 for ‘Know Me!’ The app is a clever invention aimed at re-defining 
shopping experience in stores and online. The team used Vuforia and 
Unity to develop the app and powered it with artificial intelligence and
 advanced machine learning capabilities.</div>
<div class="rtejustify">
NOMI creates an immersive and interactive AR and 
VR environment to assist customers for choosing the right product by 
showing users all they need to know about a  product from its 
nutritional facts to pricing range. It allows users of the app to choose
 among the alternatives of a product, along with real time news related 
to the product. “We took the used case of a consumer who is unaware 
about the effects of a product on his or her health and developed an app
 that could provide them with all the information they need related to 
it.” said Anshuman.</div>
