<b>SRM University has established a Tamizh Academy for the 
promotion of Tamil Language, Literature, Art, Culture, Tamil Research, 
etc., It has implemented many schemes for this purpose. It offers 
Diploma courses viz. Diaspora Tamil Teacher Yoga and Human Excellence, 
Arutsunaingnar, Books on Tamil Language, arts, literature, culture, 
etc., are being published by the Academy.</b><br />
<b>In addition to these, every year, ‘‘awards for the best books on
 various subjects and Tamil Scholars to the tune of Rs.20,50,000/- are 
being awarded for the past 4 years from 2012.</b><br />
<b>From this year some changes have been made in the Award rules 
and two more new awards have been added. The Award for young Tamil 
Scholar is to be awarded in the name of Dr. Abdul Kalam, former 
President of india. This year each award for the best books (8 in 
number) is shared between the author (Rs.1,25,000) and the publisher of 
that book (Rs.25,000).</b><br />
<b>Thus from this year onwards total awards are 12 and the total prize amount is Rs.22 lakhs.</b><br />

KNOWLEDGE HAS BECOME GLOBAL SAYS DR. BERTIL ANDERSSON OF NTU, SINGAPORE

prerogatives of the western world, the President of Nanyang Technologic al
University, Dr. Bertil Andersson<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> 
</span>stressed that research is the frontline of knowledge and that leading
universities and institutions get to the top by having right leadership and
vision. SRM University<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>conferred the
Doctorate of Science (Honoris Causa) on Dr. Andersson at a Special Convocation
at the Kattankulathur Campus.

<span style="font-size: large;">“Academics is just no longer confined to the heavy weights
of Europe and America. Institutions in Asia have started marking their
presence. Knowledge has become global”, Dr. Andersson said going on to make the
point that strides made by Singapore in the realm of education is by no means a
small achievement as two of its Universities are in the top global ratings.
“NTU is an inspiration to Asia and India” he said. “In the future SRM will get
many Nobel prizes”, he remarked.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large; line-height: 115%;">A plant
biochemist of international repute Andersson has authored more than 300 papers
in research pertaining to photosynthesis, biological membranes, protein and
membrane purification and light stress on plants. Educated at Umea and Lund
Universities of Sweden, Professor Anderson was installed as NTU’s Third
President in 2011. Currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the Nobel
Foundation, Dr. Anderson has been a member of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry
(chairing it in 1997).</span></div>

go on to make bigger things said Dr. Nicholas Dirks, Chancellor of the
University of California at Berkeley, USA who was also conferred with Doctorate
of Literature (Honoris Causa). “The Founder Chancellor of SRM University is now
seeing the fruits of his ideas. He started a small and fledgling institution.
Now it is a great University. It is ideas of this kind that are critical for Tamil
Nadu, India and the world” Dr. Dirks said stressing that Universities not only
produce knowledge but are also guardians to make the world a better place.</span><br />

anthropologist, Dr. Dirks is a prolific writer of books, articles and papers
and his fascination has been with India and the state of Tamil Nadu. Proficient
in Tamil, Dr. Dirks has focused on different aspects of Tamils and Tamil Nadu
including the cinematics of Tamil Political Culture, Marriage and Rank in Tamil
Kinship, Rituals and Resistance are some of the themes he has spoken at
international forums. The University of California at Berkeley started off as a
small idea but today it is one of the top five Universities, Dr. Dirks
remarked. “There will be greater cooperation between SRM University and the
University of California at Berkeley” he said.</span></div>

‘Tamil Perayam’ honours eminent scholars, poets and creative writers with high
awards and provides various other services for promoting Tamil language. Each
year we give Thamizh Academy Awards with a cash amount of Rs.1.5 Lacs each to
the authors of the best Tamil books in 8 divisions like poetry, fiction, child
literature, science, fine arts, music, research, translation and literary work
by foreign Tamils. Moreover awards worth Rs.2 Lacs to the best Tamil Scholar
and Rs.5 Lacs to the lifetime achiever in Tamil are also given. </span><span style="font-family: "latha" , serif; font-size: 13.0pt; line-height: 150%;"></span></div>

awards for the past five years. From this year onwards we have added new awards
to the existing list. One of the new awards is for the best Tamil organizations
serving Tamil cause at international level, national level and state level.
Another new award is for the best Tamil journal serving the Tamil cause. Thus
the total number of awards turn to be 14 to the tune of Rs.22 lacs. I feel
proud in serving the cause of our mother tongue, in such a manner.</span></div>

tongue, publishing books for popularizing the literary treasures of Tamil

to participate in this seminar jointly organized by the Sahitiya Academy and
Tamilperayam for the first time. I want to convey my thanks to the authorities
of Sahitya Academy for providing a good opportunity to us to conduct this two
day seminar at this university. I hope the lectures to be delivered in these
two days by literary scholars will throw light on the modern trends in various
forms of literature of the South India languages viz., Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam
and Kannadam which have been identified as Dravidian languages by so many
foreign scholars like Dr Caldwell and others.</span></div>

this topics were presented by Sridhar Balagar (Cannda), Payipra Radhakrishnan
(Malayalam) & V. Ramakrishnan (Tamil) </span></div>
