Unnat Bharat Abhiyan is a flagship programme under Ministry of Human
Resource Development, Govt. of India, with the aim of transforming rural India.
Following the UBA which primarily focuses Rural Health, SRM Institute of
Science & Technology conducted "Medical Camp and Swachhata Rally"
on 12th March 2019 at one of the UBA adopted villages,
Nattarasanpattu, Kundrathur block, Kancheepuram. This is also in line with the
series of events planned across SRMIST to commemorate 150th birth
anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
An enthusiastic group of students and faculties from NSS and other
departments participated in the Swachhata rally, to create awareness about
cleanliness among local people and highlighting the importance of the recent
notification from TN Government mandating "Ban on one-time use and
throw-away plastics” effective 1st January 2019. The rally was flagged off
by Dr.M. Logaraj, Head, Community Medicine and Dr.T. Rajasekaran, Deputy Head,
Mechanical Engineering and NSS Coordinator of SRMIST. Armed with captivating posters
and thought-provoking banners, they voiced their cause, gathering support along
the way. The rally ended at the Govt High School, which was the venue for the
inauguration of Medical camp.
In the inaugural event of the
medical camp, Dr.V.Thirumurugan, Associate Director (CL) delivered the
welcome address and expressed his gratitude towards both the Schools Management
for providing the venue for conducting the inaugural event and medical camp. He thanked the dignitaries for gracing the function amidst
their busy schedule. Dr. N. Sethuraman,
Registrar, SRMIST in his inaugural address, felt nostalgic and
shared the struggles and best moments of his schools studying in a Government
school. He appreciated the schools for maintaining a clean environment. Nattarasanpattu
being an UBA adopted village, he requested all the people to avail the free
medical services provided by SRM hospital. He promised SRM’s support to the NSS
and Community Medicine Department to provide medical service to people.
Mr.K.SambaSivam, President of Parent Teachers Association,
Nattarasanpattu expressed his thanks to SRM for supporting their school. He
humbly requested SRM Management to build compound wall around the school ground
and levelling work. Mr. K. Chakkarapani, Headmaster of Government High School,
and Mrs.K. Suganthi, Headmaster of Government Primary School, Nattarasanpattu
thanked Registrar-SRM for promising to support the people of Nattarasanpattu
with free medical service. They specially mentioned about the UBA cell’s activities
towards their school development. In a special address by Mrs.Satya, State
Level trainee, Swachh Bharat Mission-Grameen, Nattarasanpattu highlighted the
importance of toilet and the ill-effects of open defecation. She requested all
students to take a pledge to construct toilets in their houses, by firmly
requesting their parents. Prizes were distributed to students who took part in
speech, dance, yoga, best volunteer, full attendance and those who secured
first mark in tests.. Ms.IreneSambath, UBA Project Associate, SRMIST proposed
the vote of thanks. The function concluded with National Anthem.
Refreshment was served to all present and medical camp was formally commenced.
The student volunteers facilitated the medical camp and helped the
villagers at each of the check up stands: dental, eye, general checkup, blood
sugar testing and medicine dispensing. It was a coordinated effort by all
general physicians, dentists, nurses and lab
technicians.
