SRM University to hand out scholarships worth Rs. 5 crore
Scholarships to the tune of over Rs. 5 crore would be extended to students of SRM University across all its campuses – three in Tamil Nadu and one in New Delhi, its chancellor T.R. Pachamuthu said on Tuesday.
With the admission procedure for the various academic courses in the faculty of engineering and technology beginning on Tuesday along with counselling for the various courses, it was announced that a total waiver of tuition, hostel and transport fee would be given to recipients of the Founders' Scholarship in addition to a monthly stipend of Rs. 1,000.
Scholarship would be extended to 100 students who had secured more than 95 per cent in the plus two examinations from State Board and CBSE, top rank holders from all the 32 districts of Tamil Nadu, toppers in the SRM Engineering Entrance Examination, students from minority communities, differently-abled, athletes in addition to meritorious students from poor families, Mr. Pachamuthu added.
He also pointed out that they would soon be starting a Sikkim State University in the northeastern State. Initially, distance education in courses such as BBA, MBA and B.Com among others would be offered, before they start full-fledged engineering programmes. Mr. Pachamuthu said an investment of around Rs. 120 crore would be made and the campus will come up in about 10 acres of land.
Similarly, a Haryana State University would be established by them at the Rajiv Gandhi Education City at Sonepat in the North Indian State at a cost of about Rs. 300 crore. M.Ponnavaikko, Vice Chancellor of the private university, elaborated that many State governments, after passing an Act in the Assembly, had allowed private institutions to start State universities and SRM would be creating these institutions in Sikkim and Haryana to start with. They had received an invitation from Rajasthan to start a similar State University.
For the counselling this year, 1.8 lakh candidates had registered and of them, 1.2 lakh had appeared for the examinations, in addition to others for post graduate programmes. More than 25,000 candidates have been called for counselling.
