Eminent scientist sees a greater role for educational institutions

Educational institutions have a greater role to play in the process of nation building, said Chancellor of Homi Bhabha National Institute Dr. Anil Kakodkar. He was addressing the students during the inauguration of 16th edition of national level techno-management fest 'Aaruush' at SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) premises at Kattankulathur near Chennai today. He was the chief guest at the inauguration of Aaruush.Techno-Management Fest will be conducted for a period of four days, starting from 27 October (Thursday) it will go on till 30 October (Sunday). Dr. Anil said while institutions for higher learning undertake their regular role of promoting education, they can play a prominent role in ushering in spirit of innovation, entrepreneurship among the students.The four day fest aims to cater to an audience from all over the country and has activities like address by eminent personalities, workshops, entrepreneurial summits, industrial conclave, unconference, proshows and expos. The alumni of that institution have made contributions that are worth noting, said Dr Anil. Alumni of that institution have come up with innovations (products), their entrepreneurial ventures generate a revenue of 2.9 trillion dollars which is quite near to the GDP of our nation, he reminded.'Similar measures could be undertaken in India, he said and reminded, that our country is home to great institutions and even if small percent of them undertake such activities we can achieve wonders.'Speaking about Aaruush, Dr Anil said there is a great scope for activities like them. It is happy to see fests like these being conducted at the institutions as they have rich prospects for promoting entrepreneurship, innovation among the students which may lead to great business ventures in the future.Eminent scientist also spoke about having the humane application of science. Progess of technology may make some very powerful, there may be room for exploitation using technology. There should be little scope for that, stress should be on humane use of science and technology.Founder chancellor of SRMIST Dr T R Paarivendhar stressed for a greater role for promoting innovation and entrepreneurship. Kamakoti, stressed the need for saving power, enabling access to technology at anaffordable cost, and serving the country effectively.He said, “We are moving towards the stage where cyber-physical systems are used. This era is calledIndustry 4.0. Hence being a computer scientist alone will not suffice.”He added that the Department of Science and Technology in the Government of India has designated25–27 sectors for development, close monitoring, and deployment in various fields.“We have evolved from Mechanization, water power, steam power; mass production, assembly line,electricity; computer and automation to Cyber-physical systems. The success of this Industry 4.0 willdepend on how well we can integrate technology into five priority sectors – namely Management,Agriculture, Health Care, Fintech, and Space technology”.Emphasizing on the role of Physicians – Scientists, he said, “They are the driving force behind theunderstanding of diseases, and the development of therapies, devices, and technologies. Roughly 60-70% of FDA approvals, and policy guidelines that dictate a patient’s diagnosis, treatment, and recoverytime have been influenced by them. The links between sugar and diabetes, smoking and cancer, etc.may not have been proven without physician-scientists.”He also mentioned the exciting solutions provided by the start-ups and their need in realising the net-zero Atmanirbhar Bharat. He also spoke on the importance of the Aarogya Setu app that providedawareness during the pandemic through cloud processing. Kattankulathur, September 26:“Dispensing medicines is not just an art but a service to the community. Pharmacists play a vital role of guiding the patients,” said P V Vijayalakshmi, Director, Drugs Control Department, Tamil Nadu government, while addressing the students of SRM College of Pharmacy to mark the world pharmacist day on Monday. The event with the theme - pharmacist united in action for a healthier world - was celebrated to create awareness about the role of pharmacists in the society. “Contribution of pharmacists to society remains hidden. Besides guiding the patients in dispensing medicines, they play a key role in clinical trials, research and development, teaching and regulation and enforcement,” added Vijayalakshmi. “At the peak of the pandemic, when hospitals could not accommodate the patients, pharmacists rose to the crisis by stocking up the necessary medication, providing information on medicines and healthcare centers to the patients. They are the unsung heroes,” said R Nandakummar, Director, Communications, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST). “Pharmacists are the most accessible healthcare professionals for citizens in rural belts. With the right responsibilities, pharmacists can ensure the delivery of safe medical care and reduce adverse medication-related harm events among the patients,” Nandakummar added, while congratulating the SRM College of Pharmacy for ranking 12th in the NIRF Ranking 2022. Delivering the presidential address, Dr Lt Col A Ravikumar, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, SRMIST said, “ India proved it to the world by developing a drug for COVID-19.
