Stitching Futures: SRMIST Empowers Anjur Village through Skill Development and Holistic Wellness

Kattankulathur, March 28, 2026: As part of its steadfast commitment to community development and rural empowerment, the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) 2.0 cell of SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) has launched a comprehensive Village Service Project (VSP) at Anjur Village. This multi-dimensional initiative is being implemented in collaboration with the World Community Service Centre and Vethathiri Maharishi SKY Yoga, Guduvancherry.

The seven-month developmental roadmap, which entered its third month this March, adopts a holistic strategy focusing on mental, physical, and spiritual well-being alongside sustainable livelihood generation. The project encompasses a diverse range of community-oriented activities, including yoga practices, afforestation (tree plantation), and specialized skill development in Aari work and tailoring to foster women’s entrepreneurship.

Advancing Community Wellness through Yoga

A significant pillar of this wellness initiative is the Kundalini Yoga training program. To date, nearly 300 villagers—including men, women, youth, and the elderly—have benefited from sessions conducted by experienced resident instructors. To ensure maximum inclusivity, the sessions follow a disciplined daily schedule:

  • General Sessions: Commencing at 4:30 AM.

  • Housewives: Batches from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

  • Youth & Students: Evening sessions from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM, scheduled after academic hours.

Economic Empowerment and Skill Training

Furthering the livelihood component, SRMIST recently distributed seven industrial tailoring machines to the village, marking the official launch of a structured vocational training program.

  • Curriculum: A specialized five-month syllabus has been designed by a qualified trainer to ensure professional proficiency.

  • Enrollment: The inaugural batch consists of 30 women from the village.

  • Certification: Upon successful completion, participants will receive formal certificates to enhance their employability and support self-reliance.

Inauguration and Governance

The inaugural event was graced by Dr. V. Thirumurugan, Associate Director (Campus Life ) and Nodal Officer Unnat Bharat Abhiyan-SRMIST, along with Mrs. Devaraj, President of Anjur Village, and Mr. Uma Maheswaran. The village administration has extended full logistical support, providing dedicated space for the training center and accommodating trainers in the village community hall to ensure seamless project implementation.

This initiative underscores SRMIST’s integrated approach to rural outreach, merging health, environmental consciousness, and skill-based education into a sustainable and replicable model for rural transformation.
