It would aim at providing the young  participants a platform to present their ideas as well as the  opportunity to interact with some of the senior scientists of the  country.</h3></div></div>

MSIT-ESE Academic Program </h3><strong>ESE Program Overview</strong>     <br />

The MSIT-ESE is an academic program in the suite of software  engineering professional master’s degree programs at Carnegie Mellon  University (CMU). The purpose of the MSIT-ESE program is to prepare  students for positions as engineers building embedded software intensive  systems. The program is a joint degree program shared between the  Institute for Software Research (ISR) and the Electrical and Computer  Engineering (ECE) department. Students in the MSIT-ESE program take a  combination of courses from ISR and ECE. <br />
<br />
A minimum of 135 unit hours are required for graduation.  Students often  earn more however, especially those pursuing the 16-month program  option. It should also be noted that the MSIT-ESE program includes a  mandatory project course. The Practicum is a team oriented,  self-directed project where students have the opportunity to apply  classroom material to a real-world project.<br />
<br />
<strong>Overview of Collaboration</strong>  <br />
<br />
The SRM-CMU collaboration allows for the 12-month program option.   In the SRM-CMU collaboration, students will start the program at the SRM  campus in Chennai and will complete the program requirements at the CMU  campus in Pittsburgh. It is assumed that the students will possess an  undergraduate degree in computer science, software engineering,  electrical engineering, or similar. Students must also have some project  experience prior to beginning the joint CMU-SRM MSIT-ESE program. SRM  applicants to the program will be mutually reviewed and accepted by CMU  and SRM faculty. </div>

Inaugurating the Regional Convention on Eastern Ghats, jointly organised by the Hyderabad-based Greens Alliance for Conservation of Eastern Ghats (GRACE) and the SRM University

<div style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">The programme was inaugurated by the Governor of Tamil Nadu K. Rosaiah. In his address, he appreciated the efforts made by GRACE to protect Eastern Ghats which is a rich repository of biodiversity and a lifeline for many tribal communities. He emphasised that nature or the ecosystem has to be left intact for the posterity and each individual has the responsibility to preserve the system. The guest of honour, C.V. Shankar, Principal Secretary, Department of Environment and Forests, said that any development should not drain the natural resources of a nation and it has to be a sustainable one. He mentioned about the State’s plan to plant 10 crore saplings under a 600-crore project funded by Japanese International Cooperation Agency.</span> </span></div><div style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Tamil Nadu Governor Dr K Rosaiah  said environmental degradation has become a serious global concern.<span class="goog_qs-tidbit goog_qs-tidbit-0" style="display: inline !important; text-decoration: inherit;">Inaugurating the Regional Convention on Eastern Ghats, jointly organised by the Hyderabad-based Greens Alliance for Conservation of Eastern Ghats (GRACE) and the SRM University,</span> he said the year 2005-14 was marked as United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development and 2010-20 as United Nations Decade on Biodiversity.</span></div><div style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">"This exemplifies the concern and need for a global commitment for environment and sustainable development", he said, adding, today environmental degradation has become a major and serious global concern. "For our nation, with 17 percent of global population crammed into two per cent of land area, it's a great challenge to strike a balance between natural heritage and population and its development goals", he said.</span></div><div style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="goog_qs-tidbit goog_qs-tidbit-1" style="display: inline !important; text-decoration: inherit;">Dr Rosaiah said eastern ghats, which have a great impression and</span>influence on regional ecology, economy, culture, spiritual spheres deserve a special mention. "Its entire stretch of 1,700 km is a complex of varied ecological riches, home to tribal groups, amazing endemic species, the Red Sanders, the world's costliest wood, and the world's second largest tiger reserve at Nallamala", he pointed out.</span></div><div style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Noting that the effects of global warming add a catastrophic threat towards a mass extinction of global biological diversity, the Governor said statistics reveal that the extinction threat was estimated to be about 15 to 37 percent by 2050. "Some of the most significant and insidious threats to biodiversity and ecosystem processes include climate change, deforestation and urban development. Habitat fragmentation poses one of the threat", he said. Observing that nearly 25 percent of Eastern Ghats fall in Tamil Nadu, he said the rich environmental heritage was under tremendous pressure due to growing population and development interventions. <div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-right: 3px; padding: 0px;">A group of students from SRM University have secured the second position in the CanSat competition conducted by Nasa to test student’s ability to develop a model satellite with a deployable lander that contains one large raw hen egg.</div><div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-right: 3px; padding: 0px;">The competition had two parts, the carrier and lander, Sidhant Dhall, a final-year student of electronics and instrumentation at SRM University and team leader of WelkinSat (VaikunthSat Abhiyan), said on Saturday.</div><div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-right: 3px; padding: 0px;">“We deployed our satellite from a rocket at an altitude of about 2,000 metres. Once released, the CanSat has to descend at 10 metres per second and we used three parachutes for different altitudes to unfold mechanically, reducing the descent rate to five metres per second,” he said.</div><div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-right: 3px; padding: 0px;">The SRM team got an extra point as they had a buzzer in the lander to help them locate the lander within 500 metres from the control panel. “Immediate forecasting depends on the time of landing,” said Akshat Agarwal, a team member.</div><div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-right: 3px; padding: 0px;">This is the first time that SRM University is participating in a competition like CanSat. The representatives of the two organizations also signed another pact through which SRM University has promised to construct an additional building for the ISTE on the Indian Institute of Technology - Delhi campus. The proposed building, coming up on an area of around 20,000sqft, will be planned for the purpose of hosting technical seminars, workshops and conferences of national and international importance. They  have forgotten that it is also their duty to impart social and family  values in the minds of children,” said Additional Commissioner of  Police-Crime, Greater Chennai, Abhay Kumar Singh. Speaking at World  Elder Abuse Awareness Day Programme and Release of HelpAge India’s  Nationwide Report on Elder Abuse in India at the Office of Commissioner  of Police, Egmore, on June 14, Mr. Abhay Kumar Singh said that the  younger generation should respect elders. </div><div class="body"> The nationwide report on elder abuse was released by Abhay Kumar Singh,  and the first copy was received by Dr. M. Ponnavaikko, Vice-Chancellor,  SRM University. </div><div class="body"> “More and more senior citizens are moving into old-age homes as they are  abandoned by their sons and daughter-in-laws. Now-a-days children do  not want to take care of their dependent parents,” Mr. Abhay Kumar Singh  added. </div><div class="body"> Speaking on the occasion, Dr. M. Ponnavaikko said, “The main cause of  the high prevalence of elder abuse in India is the influence of Western  culture.” He urged the need for re-introduction of moral education in  schools. “The need and practice of respecting and caring the elderly  should be inculcated in the younger generation,” he added. “With life  expectancy on the rise, India’s population of the elderly is steadily  increasing. The collapse of the joint family system is the main cause  for the present scenario,” said P. R. Anbazhakan, Director, HelpAge  India, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. </div><div class="body"> To protect the rights of the elderly, the Central Government brought a  law in December 2007, which empowered them to proceed against their  children legally if they do not treat them well. However, a majority of  aged persons, citing family prestige as the main reason, prefer to keep  quiet, he added. </div><div class="body"> The 2012 study on Elder Abuse in India was conducted in 20 cities.  Around 77.12 per cent of senior-citizens in Bhopal were abused followed  by Guwahati (60.55 per cent ) and Lucknow (52 per cent). Awareness  should be created among school and college students on elder abuse in  India and a robust social security system should be implemented which  ensures income security to senior citizens, said Anbazhakan. </div></div>
