SRM University’s Next Tech Lab Wins iTech '16 Hackathon

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
<div class="rtejustify">
Four students from SRM University’s Kattankulathur
 campus have won ITC’s major flagship ‘iTech 2016’ competition, an
annual technology innovation and co-creation platform aimed at promoting
 entrepreneurship. The second in the series by ITC was a  30 hour
hackathon on Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR), held in
the company’s Bangalore campus on July 16 and 17, 2016. The four
intrepid IT whiz kids from SRM - Anshuman Pandey, Aditthya
Ramakrishnan, Rohan Pooniwala and Raghav Gupta raced to the top, bagging
 Rs 3 lakhs in prize money.</div>
<div class="rtejustify">
The students created a history of sorts. It’s the
first time a student team has won the prestigious hackathon beating
professional teams from across the country. The competition was strong
with established AR/VR startups participating. The elimination round saw
 45 teams make it to the finals, from over 1700 teams who applied. The
climb to the top was arduous, but success did not elude them, as they
made it to the Top 5 with a demo of their work. After the dust had
settled, the SRM team emerged on top, walking away with the cash prize
from Ms. Sushma Rajagopalan, MD and CEO - ITC Infotech.</div>
<div class="rtejustify">
The hackathon provided participants the
opportunity to convert ideas into prototypes, addressing a host of
crowd-sourced business challenges from Manufacturing, Consumer Goods,
Retail, Hospitality, Education, Stationery, Banking, Financial Services
and Insurance and Agriculture sectors. The Winning team from SRM
University, created a mixed reality smartphone app, ‘NOMI’, a short form
 for ‘Know Me!’ The app is a clever invention aimed at re-defining
shopping experience in stores and online. The team used Vuforia and
Unity to develop the app and powered it with artificial intelligence and
 advanced machine learning capabilities.</div>
<div class="rtejustify">
NOMI creates an immersive and interactive AR and
VR environment to assist customers for choosing the right product by
showing users all they need to know about a  product from its
nutritional facts to pricing range. It allows users of the app to choose
 among the alternatives of a product, along with real time news related
to the product. “We took the used case of a consumer who is unaware
about the effects of a product on his or her health and developed an app
 that could provide them with all the information they need related to
it.” said Anshuman.</div>

we have had notable educators and educationists; but there are enormous challenges in the realm of education today. “The reach is not enough and the mass of the reach is not working to quality expectation. We have to hone in on the realities of what is around us” said Mr. Sunil Kant Munjal, Joint Managing Director of Hero Moto Corp, the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturing company at SRM University.
At a glittering ceremony at its Kattankulathur Campus, SRM University conferred the Doctor of Literature (Honoris Causa), on Mr. Munjal.<br />

 He was honored with the D.Litt degree for his contribution to education, business and humanity at a Special Convocation.
“ We need to generate some One million jobs every month for the next 15 years; we also know that there are 250 million people who do not have two meals a day. We have to make the difference to reach out” the top industrialist said while delivering his acceptance speech. “Forty one per cent of Indian economy is external economy. We must continue to strengthen the local economy so that Indian can go forward”, he added. “We need to produce thousands of new leaders every year not just in sciences and technology but also in the liberal arts”, he said. “ We need to be research thinkers, design thinkers and innovators” he added.
A forward looking thinker who goes beyond narrow confines of his group, Mr. Munjal has been credited with ideas and innovation that continues to benefit India. Seen as one of those industrial icons of the country who actively pushed for the acceleration of India’s economic reforms, Mr. Munjal consistently played a major role in evolving a mutually beneficial partnership between government and industry.<br />
