that Research has an important career with incentives, the Secretary of the
Science and Engineering Research Board of the Dept. of Science and Technology,
Dr. T.K. Chandrashekar, argued that research and development efforts over the
last two decades are paying dividends, especially in the realm of the health
sector in India. <o:p></o:p></span></span><br />

and development activities may not yield results the next day but over a period
of time it offers hope… the quality of life has gone up” Dr. Chandrashekar said
while delivering the Chief Guest Address at SRM University’s Research Day
celebrations. “No country can survive without research and development. Things
have changed. The gap between the developed and developing countries is
shrinking. And this is because of Research.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

official said making the point that the Government of India has set apart Rs
90,000 crores for Research and Development that includes funding and setting up
new research institutes. Dr. Chandrashekar complimented SRM University for
coming up with the unique “Research Day”. “Inter-disciplinary research is the
mantra of the day. SRM is the right place. You have the diversity” Dr.

the theme of quality versus quantity, the President of SRM University Dr. P.
Sathyanarayanan said that research should be all pervasive with a definite
accent on quality and quality publications in high impact factor journals. “It
is not the quantity that matters” the President said making the point SRM
University has a separate Research Directorate with a concentration on
Research.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">“Without
Research no country can develop” the Chancellor of SRM University, Dr. Paari
Vendhar, said while announcing that SRM University is setting up a separate
laboratory for Research in association with SIEMENS where researchers and
students will be encouraged to work in diverse areas. “Research sharpens your
knowledge and we have a long way to go” the Chancellor said. “Research is not
just for the Professor. Everyone must have the habit of doing Research” he
added.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">As many as
121 projects with a total outlay of about Rs 53 crores from various funding
agencies are being currently implemented at SRM University; in the last few
years nearly 4400 papers have been published in national and international
journals with nearly 1050 research scholars pursuing their Ph.D program in the
University.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

This event exposed the participants to a hands-on experience in building a
start-up from scratch, i.e., idea to execution.<br />

Day 1 included formation of teams and problem description. The teams had
to come up with a solution, prepare a business model and revenue model and
make a presentation in front of the other teams, which also included a
question-answer session, to validate their idea.<br />

Day 2  tested  the teams on the grounds of marketing and
networking. The teams had to create a facebook page of their idea and get
maximum popularity. They had to exhibit their idea in a mock
start-up expo to a panel of judges.<br />

On Day 1, all the teams met the village womenfolk, talked to
them, interviewed them and understood their lifestyle, income, expenditure
and savings, problems they face, aspirations etc.<br />

After their research on Day 1, the teams  conducted a class for the
villagers teaching them anything that might solve some of<br />
their problems, add to their marketplace literacy, help them handle money,

original monopoly, the difference being that instead of buying cities,
the players will buy places of importance within SRM like Tech
Park, Library building,  Hi-Tech block, Auditorium, etc. A preset
story-line<br />
 ran and the players obtained their revenue on the basis of
the footfall in the places they own at a particular time in the story.<br />

<b>QUIZ</b><br />

<br />
This event had the structure of any typical quiz, the theme being business
and entrepreneurship.<br />
<br />
Day 1  hosted the preliminary round.<br />
<br />
Day 2  saw the finalists competing in a quiz that tests them on their
knowledge about entrepreneurship, the principles of business and<br />
prominent people and their stories.<br />
<br />
<b>FRANCHISE IT!<br />

This was an event which  tested the marketing strategies and
business tactics of the participants in a very small yet competitive
platform.<br />
<br />
A preliminary round on Day 1 filtered out participants who will be formed
into 4-6 teams. The primary goal of the teams was to set up a store of a
company brand and manage all expenditures in the allotted budget, as per a
contract.<br />
<br />
The teams  bid for the location of their respective stores
(Java, Library, Auditorium, Main Campus, etc).<br />
<br />
They were  provided with a list of quotations for everything,
like Hiring staff (male and female separate quotations).<br />

Add-on (decorations, store name board, charts, direction boards, etc.)<br />
Transportation<br />

25% shares of every team was liquefied shares (stock market), and every member
of the team was entitled to an equal percentage.<br />

Day 2 was  the on-field day, when the teams  actually
competed and tested their skills with real crowd.<br />

The objective of this event was to promote technical solutions
for existing problems, i.e., technical entrepreneurship.<br />
<br />
The first round consisted of a problem given to the participating
teams for which they had to design a technological solution.<br />
<br />
The second round  required them to pitch it in front of a panel of judges
who will test its feasibility and practicality.<br />
<br />
<b>IDEA GENERATION (Connect The Dots)</b><br />
<br />
(2 day event)<br />
<br />
This event  targeted  people who were new to the field
of entrepreneurship and aimed at giving them a basic knowledge about its<br />
principles and the skills required.<br />
<br />
On Day 1 all the participants were formed into teams of 4-5 on the basis
of a questionnaire. All the teams were allocated a similar<br />
amount of virtual funds/resources.<br />
<br />
Next, they were tested on their decision making abilities by
giving them various situations in a paper test and around 20 teams will be<br />
shortlisted.<br />
<br />
On Day 2, a different crisis or problem was described to each team for<br />
which they have to design a solution.<br />
<br />
Next, the elevator pitch in front of a panel of judges.<br />
<br />
<b>SPORTS MANAGEMENT (Dream IPL)</b><br />
<br />
(1 day event, rolling)<br />
<br />
This is an event that tested the skills required to manage a
sports team and required you to bid for a city's franchise and manage it
from<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">scratch. Each team will be given a large virtual budget for
this.<br />
<br />
The first phase involves bidding for a city which will be the base of the
franchise followed by handpicking a set of players from an<br />
available pool of players. Each team has to comprise 11 players
while satisfying a particular preset criterion. Participating teams have
to<br />
factor in the costs for running the entire sports team and the
revenue from each franchise is through ticketing sales. Criteria for<br />
ascertaining the winner was based on a set of predetermined
statistics about a player and this is applied for the whole team.<br />

participating in a long campaign that involves filling up Google<br />
forms, presenting their ideas in front of a panel of judges.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Successfully completing 100 unceasing hours, the fest was a resounding success.

with a lot of interesting events, shows and competitions, attracting thousands
of students nationwide. The inaugural day saw the performance of popular South
Korean K-pop band, N-Sonic, who won over the audience with the sheer energy of
their performance, setting the pace for the next four days. SRM Music Club and
Between Recess also performed under the Coke Studio banner.<o:p></o:p></span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: large;">With renowned bands pouring in from around the country,
Battle of the Bands + was a feast for music enthusiasts. The competition sought
the best professional-level band in two categories of music, eastern and
western. Sparsh United, the winner in the eastern category, was spirited,
soulful and won the crowds over with their brilliant performance. <o:p></o:p></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: large;">The Broadway event was a cornucopia of raw emotions,
momentous themes and powerful voices. The motifs around the performances were
social, political, humour and current issues. Guru Nanak College won the first

attitude and personality on stage. The first round comprised stunning
contestants from different colleges sashaying across the stage in their finest,

Ray, the female victor, was unapologetically honest, which endeared her to the

emerging name in RC aircraft flying. The show also hosted a 3D-night flying

about dancing. Centre Stage, the largest annual theatre event of SRM
University, saw highly-talented theatre artistes from different colleges
putting on a show. The themes they touched upon were poignant and relevant to

competitions. Host SRM University, Shastra University, VIT, and many other
colleges entertained the enthusiastic audience with aesthetically pleasing and
diverse Indian dances in the group folk competition. SRM Bhangra took the top
spot as they dazzled the crowd with their spirited performance and great song
selection. The solo dance competition saw 20 accomplished individuals
interpretatively dancing to diversified genres of music. Ingenuity, good
choreography and a clean performance gave the winner, Ram, an edge over the

this massive event, a valedictory function was held, which was attended by
dignitaries like the director of student affairs, PKA Muniswaran, the vice
chancellor of SRM, T.P. Ganesan, the registrar of SRM, N. Sethuraman and
popular actor-turned-politician, Sarath Kumar, who was the chief guest. The
Shivaji Ganesan trophy for the all-round performer went to Samruddha. Team
Dynamics won the Milan Premiere League, while SRM Riders were the runners-up.
The Balachandran Trophy for best creative mind went to Ashwin. </span><span style="font-family: Calibri;">And the biggest award for the night, the overall Milan

a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), SRM Sivaji Ganesan Film Institute,
recently. With this step, both institutions are set to usher in a new phase of
excellence in media education. “With the Semester Abroad Programme,
international faculty exchanges, International Advisory Board and the large
presence of students from 52 countries, SRM is indeed a trend setter in this
area with a proactive policy of promoting internationalism,” said T R Paarivendhar,
chancellor of SRM University.</span><br />

is named after him. His son, Mr Ram Kumar Sivaji Ganesan, Managing Director of
Sivaji Productions, who attended the function, enthralled the audience with his
magnetic presence andinspirationalmessage to the large gathering of students
and faculty. He urged the students to strive for excellence in their chosen
field and to bring laurels to the country at the international arena.<o:p></o:p><br />

and traced their path to stardom. “It is hard to get into the industry but
self-belief, hard work and perseverancewill help you to succeed in the film

 ICONN, a biennial International Conference organised by Department of 
Physics and Nanotechnology, SRM University, is attracting researchers 
across the world working in the field of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology.
 Incepted in 2010, the conference has become an important event in the 
calendar for scientists, academicians, researchers and students to 
showcase their latest and significant contributions in the field of 
Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. ICONN 2013 has been successfully 
conducted in association with Shizuoka University, Japan, GNS-New 
Zealand and ANNA-Japan and was sponsored by DST-SERB and DRDO, 
Government of India. ICONN 2015 is expected to be a common platform for 
the path breaking research ideas to motivate the young researchers in 
carrying out the state-of-the-art research work leading to an interface 
between science, industry and the societal needs. Like ICONN 2013, SRM 
University is teamed with Shizuoka University, Japan and GNS, New 
Zealand to organize this edition of ICONN.
