The 4th annual convocation of SRM University was held in SRM University at the University Auditorium on 7th September, 2008. Governor of Tamil Nadu, His Excellency, Shri. Surjith Singh Barnala delivered the convocation address. This was followed by the conferring of Honorary Doctorates to Dr. G. Madhavan Nair, Chairman, ISRO and Space Commission, Government of India and to Shri. Abhinav Bindra who is the first ever Indian gold medallist in Olympics. On this occasion, Shri. Abhinav Bindra was awarded a cash prize of Rs. 5,00,000/- by SRM University for his outstanding performance in Olympics .
Bindra also laid the foundation stone for a sports academy that includes a state-of-the-art shooting range at the SRM campus. The ten crore project aims to spot and train talented students free of cost for which Bindra will be one of the advisors of the academy. Students of various UG &PG courses and also the research scholars have been awarded with the certificates for their merit during the entire course duration. National Anthem marked the end of the convocation.
